Job Title: Software Engineer in Test Automation / QE Engineering

Job Location: Austin, TX - Hybrid (3 Days Onsite/Week) - Tues, Thurs & Fri.

Job Type: Contract

Job Description:-

Software Engineer Test Automation / QE Engineering
About the Role
Join eBay's Customer Support Technology team to design, build, and scale automation systems that improve release quality, engineering productivity, and service reliability across our customer support platforms.
This is a hands-on engineering role focused on testing and validating critical user journeys across web UI, backend APIs, integration workflows, and release pipelines. We are looking for an engineer who can drive practical automation strategy across the stack, with the primary focus on API, integration, smoke, and regression coverage, while maintaining a targeted set of high-value UI happy-path tests.
The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering fundamentals with test automation depth, CI/CD integration capability, and the ability to debug issues across UI, service, and data layers. This person should be comfortable partnering with application engineering, QE, infrastructure, and platform teams to improve release confidence and reduce manual validation effort.
What You Will Do
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable automation frameworks for UI, API, integration, regression, and smoke testing.
  • Build automated validation coverage for backend services, APIs, and end-to-end workflows that support CS Tech experiences.
  • Own critical-path UI automation for key agent and support workflows, while keeping the majority of coverage at the API and integration layers for speed, maintainability, and signal quality.
  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and release quality gates to improve deployment safety and release confidence.
  • Partner with software engineers, product managers, QE, and platform teams to define practical test strategy early in the delivery lifecycle.
  • Debug failures and product issues across UI interactions, network calls, APIs, integration points, and dependent services.
  • Improve test reliability, suite execution time, and automation maintainability through strong engineering practices and reusable tooling.
  • Support release validation, defect prevention, and root-cause analysis for complex quality and production issues.
Must-Have Qualifications
  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 7 years of experience in test automation, quality engineering, SDET, software engineering, or related areas with strong automation ownership.
  • Strong programming/scripting skills in Java, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, or similar languages.
  • Strong experience testing backend APIs and services, including request/response validation, integration validation, and service-level regression coverage.
  • Strong experience building or maintaining UI automation for modern web applications and validating frontend-to-backend integration flows.
  • Experience developing automation frameworks and integrating them into CI/CD and release workflows.
  • Strong understanding of integration testing, regression strategy, smoke coverage, and release validation approaches.
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting capability across distributed systems, services, and UI/API interactions.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments with Git-based workflows, code reviews, and cross-functional engineering collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with customer support systems, workflow orchestration, enterprise integrations, or internal tools used by operations / agent teams.
  • Experience with cloud-native systems, Kubernetes, Docker, and distributed environments.
  • Familiarity with observability platforms and diagnostics using logs, metrics, traces, and alerting.
  • Experience with non-functional, reliability, or operational validation in addition to functional automation.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development, test generation, or intelligent automation tooling is a plus.
What Success Looks Like
  • Builds scalable automation that improves release quality and reduces manual validation effort.
  • Improves deployment safety through automated quality gates and reliable release verification.
  • Creates strong test coverage across APIs, integration points, and critical UI paths without over-indexing on brittle end-to-end suites.
  • Demonstrates strong ownership, pragmatic engineering judgment, and cross-team collaboration.
  • Helps engineering teams ship faster and more safely by improving automation quality, signal clarity, and operational confidence.
Team and Impact
You will be part of eBay's Customer Support Technology organization, working on systems that support global customer service operations and agent productivity. Your work will directly improve platform quality, resiliency, release confidence, and engineering efficiency across CS Tech applications and services.
