Job description

Job Summary

NetApp is pioneering the development of StorageGRID object storage - AWS cloud compatible software powering the exponential growth in AI data lakes. As a Software Developer Engineer in Test, this is your chance to work alongside a group of talented developers, impart your vision, and rapidly launch the latest cloud storage software. Your incredible testing and automation skills will create opportunities to contribute clean code. Naturally, you are as comfortable solving our customer's AI data lake challenges by writing new code as you are improving productivity by refactoring. You are opinionated while flexible and know when to adopt new technologies.

We are true believers of Agile development and have been on the journey for many years. Since you maintain supreme levels of communication with your peers, we won't inundate you with process and documentation as you work in our flexible hybrid work-from-home/office model.

Throughout the world, leading organizations count on NetApp to manage and store their data. From the edge of human endurance in Formula One auto racing to the edge of the universe with CERN's Large Hadron Collider, we help our customers do things they couldn't before-at speeds you never thought possible.

As a Software Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and enhancing components of a large-scale distributed storage system. You will work closely with senior engineers to deliver high-quality features, contribute to system reliability and performance, and build technical depth across the platform.

This role emphasizes strong execution, growing ownership, and continuous learning, including adoption of modern engineering practices such as AI-assisted development.

Job Responsibilities

  • Software Development & Implementation

  • Design, implement, and enhance StorageGRID features and components with guidance from senior engineers

  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code across platform areas such as data path, control plane, and services

  • Debug and resolve defects, ensuring high-quality feature delivery and system stability

  • System Understanding & Problem Solving

  • Develop working knowledge of distributed systems, storage concepts, and platform architecture

  • Troubleshoot issues across components, including performance, reliability, and functional defects

  • Participate in root cause analysis and contribute to fixes and improvements

  • Design & Collaboration

  • Participate in feature design discussions, providing input on implementation approaches and trade-offs

  • Collaborate closely with senior engineers, QA, and product teams to clarify requirements and deliver solutions

  • Support integration efforts to ensure features work seamlessly within the broader system

  • AI-Assisted Development Practices

  • Use AI-assisted tools for code development, debugging, and documentation to improve productivity

  • Adopt AI-generated test scaffolding and automation where applicable

  • Contribute to team adoption of AI-assisted workflows for faster iteration and improved quality

  • Testing, Quality & Reliability

  • Develop unit tests and support system-level testing to ensure feature correctness and robustness

  • Validate feature behavior through functional and integration testing

  • Contribute to improving test coverage and reliability of existing components

  • Execution & Ownership

  • Take ownership of assigned features or components from design through delivery

  • Deliver work aligned with sprint commitments and team priorities

  • Proactively identify risks, dependencies, and improvement opportunities

  • Continuous Learning & Growth

  • Build technical depth in distributed systems, storage platforms, and cloud technologies

  • Learn and apply best practices in software design, coding standards, and debugging

  • Seek mentorship and continuously improve technical and problem-solving skills

Job Requirements

  • 3-6 years of experience in software development

  • Strong programming skills in one or more languages (C, C++, Python, Java, or similar)

  • Solid understanding of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, OS basics)

  • Experience working in Linux or similar environments

  • Familiarity with debugging and problem-solving in complex systems

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with distributed systems, storage systems, or cloud platforms

  • Familiarity with networking concepts, REST APIs, and NoSQL databases

  • Exposure to object storage concepts (S3 or similar)

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, test automation, or modern development tools

  • Exposure to AI-assisted development tools or workflows

  • Education

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
