Software Engineer Fraud Detection information

What does a software engineer fraud detection do?

A Software Engineer in Fraud Detection designs and develops systems to identify and prevent fraudulent activities within digital platforms, such as banking or e-commerce environments. They build algorithms to analyze user behavior, detect anomalies, and flag suspicious transactions in real time. Their work often involves machine learning, big data analysis, and close collaboration with data scientists and security teams to continuously improve fraud detection accuracy. These engineers play a key role in protecting businesses and customers from financial loss and cybercrime.

How does a software engineer fraud detection typically collaborate with data scientists and analysts to identify fraudulent activity?

Software Engineers in Fraud Detection work closely with data scientists and analysts to build, refine, and deploy systems that detect and prevent fraud. While data scientists may develop models and identify patterns from large datasets, engineers are responsible for integrating these models into scalable, real-time systems within the company's technology stack. Regular communication and joint problem-solving are essential, as engineers must understand the logic behind models and analysts' findings to ensure accurate implementation and continuous improvement. This collaborative environment helps create robust fraud detection mechanisms that adapt to evolving threats.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer fraud detection, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer in Fraud Detection, strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or Scala), a solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, and experience with machine learning or statistical analysis are generally required, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with big data platforms (like Hadoop or Spark), real-time analytics systems, and fraud detection tools or frameworks is typically expected. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are key soft skills that differentiate top performers in this field. These skills are crucial for developing robust systems that can quickly identify and prevent fraudulent activities, protecting both users and organizations.

What is the difference between Software Engineer Fraud Detection vs Data Scientist Fraud Detection?

AspectSoftware Engineer Fraud DetectionData Scientist Fraud Detection

About Mercor

Mercor is defining the future of work. We partner with leading AI labs and enterprises to provide the human intelligence essential to AI development.

Our vast talent network trains frontier AI models in the same way teachers teach students: by sharing knowledge, experience, and context that can't be captured in code alone. Today, more than 30,000 experts in our network collectively earn over $2 million a day.

Mercor is creating a new category of work where expertise powers AI advancement. Achieving this requires an ambitious, fast‑paced and deeply committed team. You’ll work alongside researchers, operators, and AI companies at the forefront of shaping the systems that are redefining society.

Mercor is a profitable Series C company valued at $10 billion. We work in‑person five days a week in our new San Francisco headquarters.

About the Role

As a Fraud Engineer at Mercor, you'll help build the systems that protect the integrity of our platform at scale. You'll work on high‑impact problems across identity verification, abuse prevention, and project‑level fraud, partnering closely with product and engineering to understand where risk exists, quantify it, and turn that understanding into durable systems and workflows.

This role is ideal for someone who has seen fraud problems firsthand and can translate that experience into practical roadmaps, strong technical judgment, and fast‑moving execution. If you don’t have that experience but are interested in helping spot and catch fraud and learn fast, feel free to apply. You'll join a small team where autonomy matters and where the right person can shape both strategy and implementation from day one.

This is a role with high impact and broad scope. Your contributions will help solve an enormous challenge. This small team is responsible for keeping the platform safe and saving the company many millions of dollars annually.

You will:
  • Own and build fraud detection and prevention systems across multiple fraud surfaces, including identity and platform abuse.
  • Partner closely with product and engineering to define a fraud roadmap, prioritize the highest‑leverage problems, and ship defenses quickly.
  • Design and implement tools, workflows, and backend systems that detect suspicious behavior and reduce fraudulent activity.
  • Establish clearer visibility into fraud patterns, operational risk, and the effectiveness of prevention systems over time.
  • Work across ambiguous, fast‑moving problem spaces and independently drive large scopes of work on a lean team.
What We're Looking For
  • 4+ years of experience in software engineering.
  • Preferred: Experience working on fraud or abuse prevention, with a strong understanding of how to translate patterns and threats into product and engineering roadmaps.
  • Ability to operate autonomously and take ownership over large, ambiguous problem areas.
  • Strong backend engineering fundamentals and comfort building production systems.
  • A practical, high‑judgment approach to balancing speed, security, and user experience.
Why Mercor
  • Impact: Your work will directly protect the integrity of Mercor's platform and the systems that power the future of AI work.
  • Ownership: You'll help define a critical function from an early stage, with meaningful influence over both roadmap and implementation.
  • Growth: You'll work closely with product and engineering leaders on some of the company's highest‑priority infrastructure and risk problems.
Benefits
  • Bi‑annual performance bonus structure
  • Generous equity grant vested over 4 years
  • Up to $15k Relocation bonus
  • $10K housing bonus (if you live within 0.5 miles of our office)
  • $1.5K monthly stipend for meals
  • Free Equinox membership
  • $200 monthly laundry reimbursement
  • $200 monthly personal wellness reimbursement
  • Health, Dental, Vision insurance
