What is a software engineer contract?

Software engineer contracts are agreements where software engineers are hired on a temporary basis to work on specific projects or for a set period of time, rather than as permanent employees. Contractors often work for multiple clients, are paid hourly or per project, and may have more flexible schedules. These contracts outline the scope of work, compensation, deadlines, and other terms. Contract software engineers are responsible for delivering quality code and meeting the requirements set by the client or organization. This working arrangement can offer more autonomy, but also less job security and benefits compared to full-time employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer contract?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Contract, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or proven experience in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages or frameworks required by the contract are crucial, as are any certifications in areas like AWS or Agile methodologies. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you quickly integrate with new teams and deliver results in diverse environments. These skills ensure you can efficiently contribute to projects, meet client expectations, and maintain professional flexibility across various assignments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineers working on contract positions, and how can they be managed?

Software engineers on contract often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new codebases, understanding diverse team workflows, and managing changing project scopes. It's important to proactively communicate with team members, clarify project requirements early on, and stay organized to meet tight deadlines. Additionally, maintaining a strong personal workflow and being open to feedback can help contract engineers integrate more smoothly and deliver high-quality results within limited timeframes.

Northbridge Financial Corporation

Job description

What is it like to be a Data Quality Engineer (Contract) at Northbridge Financial

Northbridge Financial is looking for an experienced Data Quality Engineer with 7+ years of hands-on experience in Data Quality, Data Warehouse testing, and ETL validation. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise, lead a team of data quality engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of enterprise data platforms.

The role requires a deep understanding of modern data ecosystems, data quality automation, and the ability to work in Agile environments while supporting business-critical reporting and analytics initiatives. This role is a contract position.

We want your talent

If you are great at:

  • Leading and mentoring a team of Data Quality Engineers, providing technical guidance, code reviews, and best practices.
  • Define and implement enterprise-wide data quality strategies for Data Warehouse and cloud data platforms.
  • Analyze business requirements and translate them into comprehensive data validation scenarios and test strategies.
  • Validate end-to-end ETL/ELT data pipelines to ensure data accuracy, integrity, and completeness.
  • Design, develop, and maintain automated data quality and regression testing frameworks.
  • Perform source-to-target validation, reconciliation, transformation testing, and data profiling.
  • Collaborate closely with Business Analysts, Data Engineers, Product Owners, and business stakeholders to clarify requirements and resolve data quality issues.
  • Coordinate with internal engineering teams to ensure timely delivery of high-quality data solutions.
  • Identify root causes of data issues and work with development teams to drive permanent resolutions.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Establish data quality metrics, dashboards, and governance practices to continuously monitor data health.
  • Support release validation, production deployments, and post-release data verification.

If you have:

  • Bachelor's degree, Diploma or Certificate in Computer Science, other related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in Data Quality Engineering, ETL/Data Warehouse testing, or related data engineering roles.
  • Proven experience leading or mentoring a team of Data Quality or QA professionals.
  • Strong experience working in Agile software development environments.

We really mean it when we say we put you first. Here are a few ways how:

  • We have a flexible hybrid model that allows you to work from home up to 2 days per week, with added flexibility for when you really need it.
  • We help you prioritize your well-being from day one through flexible health benefits, early leave days, wellness programs, rewards, and recognition programs.
  • We are invested in helping you grow in your career through education assistance, internal mobility, and mentoring programs.
  • NBFC cares about the community and supports the causes you believe in with donation matching and team volunteer days.

We're committed to pay transparency and fairness. The hourly range for this role is 60-65 $/hr which reflects the expected base pay - not the total compensation package. The actual rate may vary depending on your experience, skills, and alignment with the position. We're also open to candidates at different levels, so if this range doesn't quite match your expectations, don't let that hold you back - we'd still love to hear from you.

This is a real opportunity - we're actively hiring! If the role sounds like a good fit, we encourage you to apply. Beyond base pay, we offer a robust Total Rewards program that includes benefits, wellness support, and other meaningful perks.

We also want to be transparent about our hiring process. While one of our systems includes AI capabilities, over 99% of our screening is done by real people. We believe in thoughtful, human-centered hiring decisions, and are committed to giving every application the attention it deserves.
