What is a software engineer contract?

Software engineer contracts are agreements where software engineers are hired on a temporary basis to work on specific projects or for a set period of time, rather than as permanent employees. Contractors often work for multiple clients, are paid hourly or per project, and may have more flexible schedules. These contracts outline the scope of work, compensation, deadlines, and other terms. Contract software engineers are responsible for delivering quality code and meeting the requirements set by the client or organization. This working arrangement can offer more autonomy, but also less job security and benefits compared to full-time employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer contract?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Contract, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or proven experience in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages or frameworks required by the contract are crucial, as are any certifications in areas like AWS or Agile methodologies. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you quickly integrate with new teams and deliver results in diverse environments. These skills ensure you can efficiently contribute to projects, meet client expectations, and maintain professional flexibility across various assignments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineers working on contract positions, and how can they be managed?

Software engineers on contract often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new codebases, understanding diverse team workflows, and managing changing project scopes. It's important to proactively communicate with team members, clarify project requirements early on, and stay organized to meet tight deadlines. Additionally, maintaining a strong personal workflow and being open to feedback can help contract engineers integrate more smoothly and deliver high-quality results within limited timeframes.

Job description

Position Summary...Join Walmart Global Tech as a Staff Software Engineer and become the technical backbone of our cross-border commerce platform. In this role within our Growth Tech Marketplace organization, you'll design cross-service architectures, set engineering standards across squads, and translate complex business challenges into scalable, production-grade systems that power international trade at Walmart scale.
About Team:
Our team creates reusable technologies to help with customer acquisition, onboarding, and empowering merchants, while ensuring a seamless experience for both of these stakeholders. We also optimize tariffs and assortment in accordance with Walmart's Everyday Low Cost philosophy. We not only create affordability, but we also deliver customized experiences for customers across all channels - in-store, mobile app, and websites.  What you'll do...
Lead Cross-Service Architecture & System Design
Own the end-to-end technical design of cross-border trade systems — including seller onboarding, order orchestration, compliance, and payments infrastructure — establishing reusable architectural patterns across multiple squads that are reliable, observable, and built to scale globally.
Set and Enforce Engineering Standards
Define and drive adoption of coding standards, testing practices, SDLC compliance (SonarQube, Snyk, Gatekeeper quality gates), and API design principles across CBT engineering teams — raising the collective bar through documentation, design reviews, and active mentorship.
Partner with Product & Engineering Leadership on Technical Feasibility
Collaborate with PMs and Engineering Managers to assess roadmap feasibility, surface technical risks early, and guide build-vs-buy-vs-partner decisions — translating ambiguous business requirements into well-scoped, executable engineering plans.
Own Non-Functional Requirements & Production Readiness
Lead production readiness reviews; define and own SLOs/SLAs for critical cross-border services; drive observability, incident response preparedness, and capacity planning across the platform to ensure resilience and uptime at Walmart scale.
Mentor Senior Engineers & Drive a High-Performance Engineering Culture
Actively mentor and grow Senior Software Engineers (L5); lead architecture working groups and communities of practice; champion AI-augmented development (Wibey, GitHub Copilot) as a team multiplier within CBT squads.

What you'll bring:
Distributed Systems & Cloud-Native Architecture Expertise
Deep, hands-on experience designing and operating scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems — microservices, event-driven architecture, message queuing, and cloud-native platforms (Kubernetes/WCNP, GCP/Azure) — ideally in e-commerce or marketplace environments.
System Thinking Across Service Boundaries
Ability to reason across multiple services and teams simultaneously — identifying cross-cutting concerns (shared data models, consistency guarantees, API contracts, observability) and making holistic design decisions that improve the whole platform, not just a single service.
Technical Leadership & Multi-Squad Influence
Track record of driving technical alignment across multiple squads without direct authority — through strong communication, credibility, and the ability to build consensus on engineering standards, architectural decisions, and delivery trade-offs.
Commerce Domain Knowledge
Working familiarity with e-commerce or marketplace platform challenges — seller integrations, order lifecycle management, international compliance, multi-currency handling, and cross-border logistics — enabling sound, domain-aware architectural decisions.
Operational Excellence & Reliability Mindset
Strong orientation toward production quality — experience owning SLOs, leading incident retrospectives, building observability into system design (metrics, logging, tracing), and proactively addressing technical debt before it becomes customer impact.
