What is a software engineer contract?

Software engineer contracts are agreements where software engineers are hired on a temporary basis to work on specific projects or for a set period of time, rather than as permanent employees. Contractors often work for multiple clients, are paid hourly or per project, and may have more flexible schedules. These contracts outline the scope of work, compensation, deadlines, and other terms. Contract software engineers are responsible for delivering quality code and meeting the requirements set by the client or organization. This working arrangement can offer more autonomy, but also less job security and benefits compared to full-time employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer contract?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Contract, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or proven experience in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages or frameworks required by the contract are crucial, as are any certifications in areas like AWS or Agile methodologies. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you quickly integrate with new teams and deliver results in diverse environments. These skills ensure you can efficiently contribute to projects, meet client expectations, and maintain professional flexibility across various assignments.

Software engineers on contract often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new codebases, understanding diverse team workflows, and managing changing project scopes. It's important to proactively communicate with team members, clarify project requirements early on, and stay organized to meet tight deadlines. Additionally, maintaining a strong personal workflow and being open to feedback can help contract engineers integrate more smoothly and deliver high-quality results within limited timeframes.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and dynamic individual to join our team as a Project Engineer. As a member of the Professional Services team, you will be accountable for the end-to-end activities (including design, pricing, project management, and the hands-on deployment of CoolIT products). You will work closely with customers, internal stakeholders, and vendors to ensure the seamless execution of ongoing projects. As part of a diverse team, you'll be expected to help support the mentorship of new team members and contribute to the ongoing innovation of how Professional Services offers our engineering support to customers. Your knowledge and experience will be leaned on by internal and external stakeholders to drive innovative solutions while managing risk, cost and resource allocation.

Responsibilities:

  • Project planning and execution: Managing the day-to-day aspects of the project, including coordinating with vendors, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to ensure that the project is completed on time, within scope, and on budget.
  • Technical Expertise: Independently design, validate and deliver solutions, ensuring that all project designs meet the required specifications and industry standards, and sharing technical guidance with the team.

  • Risk management: Take full ownership of identifying potential risks to the project (e.g., delays, cost overruns) and communicating strategies to mitigate them.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Applied Science degree in a relevant engineering discipline. 2-3 years recent related experience following professional registration; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Membership or eligibility for immediate membership as a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
  • Sound technical knowledge and understanding of engineering principles and their application in relevant discipline. Ability to act as a resource to staff and provide sound and practical guidance for unusual or problem situations.
  • Proven contract administration and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize a series of project components for large complex projects to meet multiple time based deliverables requiring a high level of detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented work environment and deal effectively with disagreements to prevent the escalation of conflict.
  • Must be open to travel up to 20% and hold a valid passport to travel internationally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Field engineering experience and/or Data Center related experience from a related field.
  • Understanding of P&ID drawings, 2D and 3D mechanical pipe design with ability to create, review and approve drawings and models.
  • PMP Certification or equivalent
  • Experience working with modelling software like SolidWorks, Revit MEP, and or AutoCAD.
  • Experience in selling and deploying products in partnership with customers, end-users and other stakeholders seen as an asset.

Skills:

  • Project Planning and Execution: Manages medium sized projects with minimal support, presents solutions while identifying risks and supports development of new PM strategies and processes.
  • Mechanical Design: Strong technical knowledge of cooling systems, heat transfer concepts, and mechanical design. Ability to independently design complex liquid cooling systems and provide multiple design options to a customer.
  • Sales Knowledge and Support: Independently leads technical input in project proposals and can quote systems with minimal guidance from more senior team members.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to peers and external customers.
  • Product Knowledge: Well-rounded product knowledge with ability to support and resolve customer support cases independently. Advises on behalf of PFS for new product launches, and quality compliance topics.
