Job description

About Norm Ai
Norm Ai, the agentic law company, has a client base with a combined $30 trillion in assets under management.
Norm Ai pioneered Legal Engineering, the process that empowers lawyers to build and supervise domain-specific AI agents with Norm's proprietary suite of no-code software tools. Norm Ai technology is deployed inside many of the largest and most consequential institutions in the world.
Norm Ai is also the technology behind Norm Law, LLP, a separate but affiliated AI-native law firm built for the era of agentic AI. Norm Law's attorneys advise leading institutions across private funds, private equity, venture capital, real estate, registered funds, and financial regulation, using the same legal intelligence platform that powers Norm Ai's products.
AI Fluency:
Norm Ai expects all team members to be fluent in AI. Successful candidates actively use AI in their day-to-day work to support thinking, creation, and problem-solving. They use it to improve the quality and speed of their work and to continuously refine how work gets done end-to-end.
Candidates should be prepared to demonstrate and discuss their AI usage throughout the interview process, including concrete examples of tools, workflows, and outcomes. We look for practical, hands-on experience, not theoretical familiarity.
This Role
As an Applied AI Engineer at Norm Ai, you will design, build, and iterate on enterprise-grade AI agents for end-to-end completion of high-stakes legal workflows. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on shipping reliable, scalable AI-driven functionality into a live enterprise platform. You'll work closely with our software engineering, legal engineering, and product teams to bridge disciplines and expand the coverage and capabilities of our automation platform.
You Will:
  • Build and integrate LLM-backed workflows, including prompt systems, retrieval, memory, evaluation, and feedback loops.
  • Develop new AI workflows and systems that make cutting-edge AI available across our platform.
  • Regularly contribute performant, high-quality code to our production codebase, conforming to the high standards of our engineering team.
  • Oversee data collection, experimentation, and data analysis to continuously improve the platform, working closely with domain experts.
  • Build comprehensive benchmarks and evaluation suites to measure AI agent performance and guide future improvements to the platform.
  • Architect the system of underlying prompts that power our AI agents, engineering effective context structures and automated pipelines for prompt optimization.
  • Enable continuous learning in our AI agents through memory, feedback, and client-specific preferences.
  • Develop a legal and compliance domain expertise to assist with all of the above.
Skills & Experience - Core
  • 4+ years of experience as a software engineer, applied AI engineer, ML engineer, or data scientist
  • Strong programming skills in Python, proficiency in Docker and data storage technologies such as Postgres and Redis
  • Experience working with production systems, including debugging, monitoring, and iterating on live software.
  • Willingness to work with frontend technologies (Typescript, React, etc.) to bridge the gap between research ideas and the productization of new initiatives
  • Experience in AI/ML infrastructure and tooling
  • Experience integrating AI or ML components into real-world systems (LLMs, classical ML, or hybrid approaches)
  • Interest in becoming a legal and compliance domain expert and working closely with professionals in the field
  • Strong reading, writing, and quantitative skills, as well as a data-driven approach to problem solving
Skills & Experience - Pluses
  • Familiarity with and an eagerness to apply the latest AI research
  • Experience applying traditional ML systems and processes in the context of state-of-the-art LLMs
  • Experience deriving insights from PDFs and other unstructured or semi-structured data types
  • Experience with context engineering and memory in the context of AI agents
  • Experience modeling uncertainty in ML systems
