Job description

Recognized as the No. 1 site trusted by real estate professionals, Realtor.com® has been at the forefront of online real estate for over 25 years, connecting buyers, sellers, and renters with trusted insights and expert guidance to find their perfect home. Through its robust suite of tools, Realtor.com® not only makes a significant impact on the real estate industry at large, but for consumers, navigating the biggest purchase they will make in their life, by providing a user experience that is easy to use, easy to understand, and most of all, easy to make decisions.

Join us on our mission to empower more people to find their way home by breaking barriers to entry, making the right connections, and building confidence through expert guidance.

About the team

You will be joining the Client Experiences tech community at Realtor.com, where we build scalable applications, explore new technologies and trends, and create solutions that help customers buy, rent, and sell homes while also equipping real estate professionals with tools to manage listings, collaborate effectively, and grow their businesses.

The Role

A Senior Staff Software Engineer at Realtor.com is a seasoned technical leader who focuses on the most ambiguous and high-impact problems facing the organization. Building on the Staff Software Engineer expectations documented for Client Experiences, this role operates with a holistic, system-wide perspective, guiding technical direction across multiple teams and shaping decisions that balance short-term product needs with long-term business and operational success.

In this role, you will partner closely with Product Management, Engineering, Design, and other cross‑functional stakeholders to identify opportunities, define technical strategy, and deliver durable solutions for our customer‑ and client‑facing experiences. You will set a high bar for engineering excellence through your technical leadership, code quality, design judgment, and ability to mentor engineers across teams.

What You'll Do:
  • Work collaboratively across teams composed of Product Managers, Engineers, and Designers, helping align technical direction with product goals and customer needs.

  • Own the delivery, quality, and reliability of client‑facing applications from the user interface to the data store, with responsibility at a system‑wide level.

  • Lead the design and evolution of scalable architectures, providing guidance not only within your immediate team but also across adjacent teams and platforms.

  • Drive sound technical trade‑offs between speed, maintainability, scalability, and long‑term operational health, while promoting reuse of proven solutions wherever practical.

  • Partner with Product Management on project ideas, technical discovery, and solution shaping for complex, ambiguous initiatives.

  • Engage with customers, stakeholders, and peers to ensure the solutions we build address meaningful problems and deliver measurable value.

  • Provide support for production issues, profile performance, and lead root cause analysis when something goes wrong.

  • Create API endpoints that are secure, reliable, scalable, and well‑documented through Apollo GraphQL.

  • Develop reusable components and frameworks for data transformation, anomaly detection, and data quality improvements.

  • Actively seek out new technologies, evaluate them, and make recommendations on how to integrate them into our products and engineering solutions.

  • Present products, architectural direction, and key initiatives to internal stakeholders and leadership.

  • Mentor and develop engineers across teams through code reviews, design discussions, technical coaching, and team planning.

  • Operate effectively in a primarily Agile/Scrum product development environment.

  • Be self‑directed, take initiative, and drive toward solutions with little to no guidance.

What You'll Bring:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

  • 10+ years of experience in software development.

  • 4+ years of experience contributing to architecture and design.

  • Experience building software in, or the interest and ability to learn, the Realtor.com stack of Python, NestJS, React, TypeScript, and Next.js.

  • Experience with database warehousing and data pipelines such as Snowflake and Airflow; AWS knowledge preferred.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence across teams and departments.

  • Demonstrated success delivering high value to customers quickly and frequently, with regular feedback and support.

  • Strong experience with system design and making thoughtful trade‑offs between different design approaches.

  • Strong software engineering best practices, including testing, code reviews, documentation, and operational ownership.

  • A track record of mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar across a broader engineering organization.
