Software Development Quality Assurance information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Quality Assurance professional, and why are they important?

To excel in Software Development Quality Assurance, you need a solid understanding of software testing methodologies, programming basics, and a relevant degree or certifications such as ISTQB. Familiarity with automated testing tools (like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG), bug tracking systems (such as Jira), and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify issues and collaborate with development teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring software reliability, reducing defects, and delivering high-quality products to users.

What is software development quality assurance?

Software development quality assurance (QA) is a process that ensures software products meet specified requirements and quality standards before being released. QA involves planning, designing, monitoring, and improving the development process through systematic testing and review. The goal is to identify defects and issues early, reduce bugs, and ensure the software works as intended, providing a reliable and user-friendly experience. QA professionals may use both manual and automated testing methods to validate the software throughout its development lifecycle.

Which pays more, QA or QC?

In the field of software development quality assurance, QA (Quality Assurance) roles typically offer higher salaries than QC (Quality Control) positions due to their broader responsibilities in process improvement and prevention. QA professionals often require skills in testing methodologies, automation tools, and process management, which can influence compensation levels. Salary differences can also depend on experience, certifications, and the company's size and location.

Is software QA a good career?

Software Quality Assurance (QA) is a viable career path that involves testing software to ensure quality and functionality. It offers opportunities for growth, requires skills in testing tools and scripting, and is essential in the software development process. Many QA roles provide stable employment and the chance to develop technical expertise.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

In the field of software development quality assurance, engineers typically do not earn $500,000 annually. High salaries in tech are more common for senior software engineers, engineering managers, or specialized roles with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership responsibilities. Compensation at this level often includes bonuses, stock options, or other incentives, and is more prevalent in senior or executive positions within large tech companies.

What is the difference between Software Development Quality Assurance vs Software Testing?

AspectSoftware Development Quality AssuranceSoftware Testing
FocusProcesses, standards, and overall quality management throughout the development lifecycleExecution of test cases to identify bugs and issues in the software
ResponsibilitiesDeveloping quality processes, audits, and ensuring compliance with standardsDesigning, executing, and reporting on test cases and scenarios
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of QA methodologies, process improvement, certifications like ISTQBTesting techniques, tools, and certifications like ISTQB
Work EnvironmentCollaborative with development teams, process-orientedHands-on testing, often in dedicated testing teams

While both roles aim to improve software quality, Software Development Quality Assurance focuses on establishing and maintaining quality processes across the development lifecycle, whereas Software Testing concentrates on executing tests to find bugs. QA ensures the overall quality standards are met, while testing verifies specific functionalities.

How does a Software Development Quality Assurance (QA) professional typically collaborate with developers and product managers during a project?

Software Development QA professionals work closely with developers to understand the technical implementation of features and to identify potential risks early in the development cycle. They often participate in daily stand-ups and sprint planning meetings to align on priorities and clarify requirements with product managers. Collaboration involves providing feedback on testability, reviewing user stories, and communicating defects or issues found during testing. This teamwork helps ensure software quality and smooth releases, fostering a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement throughout the project lifecycle.

What does QA do in software development?

In software development, QA (Quality Assurance) professionals test software to identify bugs, ensure functionality, and verify that the product meets specified requirements. They develop test plans, execute manual or automated tests, and document issues to improve software quality before release.

Job description

About Braille Works:

Braille Works is a family owned, Christ centered company and one of the nation's leading providers of reading materials for people who are visually impaired and blind. We are dedicated to Making the world a more readable placeTM, delivering high-quality, accessible documents for our clients in healthcare, finance, and education.

SUMMARY:

We are looking for a Senior QA Tester who will serve as a hands-on quality owner for an emerging automation platform that remediates complex documents into accessible outputs. This role is focused on a blend of manual and automation-supported testing. You will execute high-skill exploratory testing, create and maintain formal test cases, and contribute to automated testing within an existing Playwright (C#) framework to reduce regression time and increase release confidence. This job requires strong judgment, strong communication, and comfort operating in ambiguity while features evolve.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

The essential functions listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Manual, Exploratory, and Accessibility Testing

  • Perform scenario-based and exploratory testing across complex workflows, including edge cases and variability common to document remediation.

  • Verify remediation outputs for accuracy and usability, including output consistency across repeated runs and differing inputs.

  • Execute end-to-end workflow validation (from inputs through outputs), ensuring defects are caught before they become production support issues.

Automation Contributions

  • Contribute automated tests to an existing Playwright (C#) framework, prioritizing:

    • UI workflow automation

    • API validation where it strengthens coverage and speed

    • Screenshot/visual comparisons where they provide reliable signal

  • Identify and help reduce flaky tests by improving test design, test data, and assertions; coordinate with the SDET II for framework-level changes when needed.

  • Expand regression automation with a focus on test value: coverage that reliably prevents repeat defects and reduces manual regression effort.

Test Case Management and Documentation

  • Create and maintain formal test cases using Jira-based tooling.

  • Keep test assets current as features evolve, with an emphasis on clarity, reuse, and maintainability.

Defect Reporting and Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Write high-signal defects that enable fast fixes: clear reproduction steps, expected vs. actual results, and supporting evidence (screenshots, logs, sample files, and environment details).

  • Partner closely with the SDET, QA peers, and Support Specialists to reproduce issues, validate fixes, and prevent repeat problems.

  • Participate in planning/refinement to identify risk early, clarify requirements, and ensure testability is built into the work.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong exploratory testing skills and the ability to design scenarios that uncover edge cases and workflow failures.

  • Strong defect communication: reproducible bugs, strong evidence, clear impact.

  • Experience contributing automated tests within an existing automation framework.

  • Practical experience with test automation tools (Playwright, Selenium, or Cypress), with strong preference for Playwright (C#) or demonstrated ability to ramp quickly.

  • Experience creating and maintaining formal test cases and test documentation.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May mentor junior QA testers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position operates in a hybrid work environment with the expectation that the employee is able to report to the designated office location as needed for meetings, trainings, audits, or other business requirements. This role may require periodic on-site presence based on business needs. COMPANY-WIDE STANDARDS AND COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS

All positions are required to:

  • Comply with all company policies, procedures, and documented standards.

  • Protect sensitive and confidential information in accordance with company data protection and security policies.

  • Adhere to approved data transmission protocols and system usage requirements.

  • Follow acceptable use standards for technology and internet access to reduce cybersecurity risk.

  • Maintain physical security controls, including proper badge use and prevention of unauthorized access.

  • Demonstrate professional, respectful, and work-appropriate conduct at all times.

  • Adapt to system, workflow, and procedural changes as business needs evolve.

  • Cooperate with cross-functional support and assist other departments when assigned.

  • Maintain and continuously develop the technical, interpersonal, and conceptual skills required for the role.

  • Support additional hours as needed to meet client delivery commitments and service level agreements (SLAs), based on business demand.
