Software Development Engineer Internship information

What is a software development engineer internship?

A Software Development Engineer Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in software engineering. Interns typically work on real-world projects alongside experienced engineers, learning how to design, develop, test, and maintain software applications. These internships help individuals build technical skills, gain industry knowledge, and often serve as a pathway to full-time roles after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development engineer intern?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), algorithms, and data structures, usually backed by ongoing computer science coursework. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and issue tracking tools is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help interns stand out and integrate smoothly into development teams. These abilities are crucial for quickly learning on the job, contributing to projects, and collaborating effectively in a fast-paced tech environment.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a software development engineer internship?

As a Software Development Engineer Intern, you'll typically work on real-world projects that contribute to your team's goals, such as developing new features, fixing bugs, or improving existing systems. You may be assigned to collaborate with full-time engineers on coding tasks, code reviews, or testing processes. Interns often participate in sprint planning meetings and are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and seek feedback. This hands-on experience helps you build technical skills, gain exposure to the software development lifecycle, and understand how engineering teams collaborate in a professional setting.

What is the difference between Software Development Engineer Internship vs Software Development Engineer?

Job description

About SureSwift Capital

SureSwift Capital is a private equity firm with a diversified digital portfolio, seeking a seasoned, front-end-leaning full-stack developer to build and modernize software across a portfolio of SaaS businesses. Our focus is transformation via AI enablement, and this role sits at the center of it: someone who thinks differently about how software gets built, leveraging AI as a core part of their workflow, not just a tool.

About the Role

The successful candidate will work across different web technology stacks as a true generalist, ramping quickly in unfamiliar environments and using AI to accelerate development, reduce friction, and ship high-quality features faster. They will own feature development end-to-end while maintaining the stability and performance of existing production systems. This role works closely with the cross-functional team and reports to the Portfolio Leader (or designate).

The ideal candidate is a hands-on builder who is equally comfortable extending legacy production applications and shipping polished new features, with a genuine eye for how software looks and feels to the user.

What You’ll Do Feature Development & Delivery
  • Own feature development end-to-end, from UI design through backend implementation, QA, and deployment.
  • Partner with the Portfolio Leader and business teams to prioritize and deliver features for existing applications.
  • Build new features, fix bugs, and optimize performance across diverse tech stacks.
  • Set and uphold a high bar for how things look and feel to the user.
AI-Augmented Engineering
  • Develop repeatable approaches and best practices for AI-assisted development.
  • Own AI as a core part of the development workflow to accelerate delivery and reduce friction.
  • Apply and champion AI-powered code generation and agentic tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) throughout the build process.
Legacy Systems & Code Quality
  • Take ownership of understanding and extending legacy production systems while maintaining stability and performance.
  • Drive modernization of existing applications without disrupting customers.
  • Establish robust test coverage, regression checks, and safe deployment workflows.
What You Bring Required
  • Demonstrated experience with modern AI coding tools (especially agentic solutions like Claude Code) as a core part of the workflow.
  • Product-First AI Mindset: Focus on business value, user experience, and applying use of development via models directly to solve practical end-user challenges.
  • Experience modernizing and extending existing legacy production applications while maintaining stability.
  • Proven track record of technically leading engineering workstreams, taking ownership of the development lifecycle, and mentoring junior-to-mid level developers.
  • Proven history of delivering high-quality, maintainable software within production environments, emphasizing robust testing, rigorous security auditing, and proactive dependency management.
  • Experience with modern frontend and backend technologies, including PHP, CodeIgniter, MySQL, JavaScript, jQuery, Bootstrap, Docker, and AWS.
  • UI/UX design sensibility or formal design experience.
  • Ability to communicate with executive leadership effectively on project status.
What We Offer
  • Flexible scheduling, focus on deliverables
  • Extended health and dental benefits from day one
  • Annual salary $140,000- $190,000 CDN
We are a remote company and are filling this role in Canada. We have office space and hybrid work available for candidates located in Victoria, BC. We thank everyone for their consideration.
