As a Software Development Engineer Intern, you'll typically work on real-world projects that contribute to your team's goals, such as developing new features, fixing bugs, or improving existing systems. You may be assigned to collaborate with full-time engineers on coding tasks, code reviews, or testing processes. Interns often participate in sprint planning meetings and are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and seek feedback. This hands-on experience helps you build technical skills, gain exposure to the software development lifecycle, and understand how engineering teams collaborate in a professional setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), algorithms, and data structures, usually backed by ongoing computer science coursework. โ€ข Lead performance, scalability, security, and chaos engineering testing efforts to guarantee the long-term resilience of LVTโ€™s platforms under heavy load.
โ€ข Partner with Product Managers and Software Engineers during early design phases to champion testability, define clear quality metrics, and mitigate risks early.
โ€ข Conduct rigorous code reviews for test automation scripts, enforcing high standards of maintainability, clean code patterns, and modern design principles.
โ€ข Diagnose complex, intermittent system failures across microservices architectures and build comprehensive observability dashboards to track platform health.
โ€ข Evaluate and introduce cutting-edge testing tooling, strategies, and AI-driven or self-healing testing practices to maximize overall engineering efficiency.
โ€ข Mentor and coach Mid-level and Senior SDET I engineers, fostering a strong culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous learning.
Qualifications:
Required:

โ€ข Expertise across industry-standard automation tools and frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Appium, RestAssured) with the ability to build from scratch.
โ€ข Hands-on experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and modern infrastructure-as-code practices.
โ€ข Strong proficiency in SQL/NoSQL databases, microservices testing paradigms, and debugging across complex, interdependent backend architectures.
โ€ข A relentless drive to root out flaky tests, optimize automated test execution times, and solve deep, systemic technical bottlenecks.
โ€ข Exceptional communication and partnership skills, with a proven ability to align developers, product owners, and executives toward a quality-first engineering culture.
