Software Development Engineer Intern information

What does a software development engineer intern do?

A Software Development Engineer Intern assists in designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications under the guidance of experienced engineers. Interns typically work on real projects, write code, debug issues, and collaborate with team members to learn the software development lifecycle. This role helps interns gain practical experience, improve programming skills, and understand how software teams operate in a professional environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer Intern, you typically need proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, and a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, often supported by coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes cloud platforms or version control systems is expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns collaborate and adapt quickly. These skills and qualities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects while growing their technical and teamwork abilities in a real-world environment.

What types of projects do software development engineer interns typically work on, and how much ownership do they have over their work?

As a Software Development Engineer Intern, you will often contribute to real-world projects that may range from feature development and bug fixes to prototyping new tools or improving existing systems. Interns are usually paired with a mentor and integrated into agile teams, where they are encouraged to take ownership of their assigned tasks and present their solutions. While guidance and code reviews are standard, interns are trusted to design, implement, and test their code, allowing for meaningful hands-on experience and a direct impact on product outcomes.

Job description

Overview

Sedaro is hiring a Software Engineer Intern to build capabilities across our aerospace simulation platform – from the React UI that aerospace engineers interact with daily to the Python/Django services that power it. You'll work across the stack, developing features end-to-end and gaining hands-on experience with cloud-native infrastructure.

  • Team: Studio, reporting to the Engineering Manager
  • Location: In person in Arlington, VA
  • U.S. Citizen or permanent resident status required

Who We Are

Our cloud-native simulation platform enables digital mission engineering through distributed, scalable, faster than real-time analyses across hundreds of interacting systems. We build powerful analytics and 3D renderings on a modern React/TypeScript foundation, backed by Python, Django, Kubernetes, and Postgres. Join us and develop expertise across the full stack while delivering cutting-edge capabilities for aerospace engineers.

Who You Are

  • You love tools built by engineers, for engineers
  • You take pride in breaking down technical challenges and delivering wins
  • You’re energized by deep learning and sharing knowledge across disciplines
  • You find beauty in the elegant communication of complex information

What You’ll Do

  • Build features end-to-end – from React UI components to Django API endpoints
  • Design and implement API contracts that serve clear, performant user experiences
  • Develop intuitive data visualizations that surface complex simulation outputs
  • Write automated tests across the stack
  • Deliver regularly in a Lean and Agile process
  • Foster a culture of learning, empowerment, and achievement

Benefits

  • Flexible work schedule with core hours
  • Company provided lunches 3 days a week
  • Industry-leading career development opportunities

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience
  • Hands-on experience building web applications with React
  • Familiarity with at least one server-side language (Python preferred)

Additional desirable experience:

  • Experience with Django or another web framework
  • Experience with relational databases (Postgres, SQL)
  • Experience with containerization (Docker)
  • Experience with data visualization
