What is a software development engineer in test?

A Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) is a professional who combines software development skills with expertise in testing to ensure the quality of software products. SDETs design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks, write test scripts, and work closely with developers to identify and resolve defects early in the software development lifecycle. They play a critical role in integrating testing into the development process, improving test coverage, and enabling continuous integration and delivery. SDETs often have strong programming abilities and a deep understanding of both software engineering and quality assurance best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development engineer in test?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), you need a solid background in software engineering principles, programming skills (often in languages like Java, Python, or C#), and a strong understanding of testing methodologies. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (such as Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG), CI/CD tools, and sometimes certifications like ISTQB are typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help SDETs collaborate with developers and identify issues efficiently. These skills are crucial to ensure robust, scalable, and high-quality software products through efficient test design and automation.

How does a software development engineer in test typically collaborate with developers and QA teams during the software development lifecycle?

As an SDET, you'll work closely with both software developers and quality assurance teams throughout the development process. Your role involves participating in design and code reviews to ensure testability, creating automated test frameworks, and writing test cases alongside developers. You'll also help identify bugs early, contribute to continuous integration pipelines, and facilitate communication between development and QA to ensure high-quality releases. This collaborative environment allows you to bridge the gap between coding and testing, making you a key player in delivering reliable software.

Powered by our myQ technology, we make access simple and secure for millions of homeowners, businesses, and communities worldwide. Our flagship brands, LiftMaster and Chamberlain, are found in 51+ million homes, and 14 million+ people rely on the myQ app daily.

This is a role within Chamberlain Group's Engineering team. The SDET Level 2 is an experienced engineer focused on building and executing test automation solutions that ensure product reliability and user satisfaction. This role involves hands-on development of automated test cases across web, mobile, and API layers using modern tools and frameworks. As a core member of an Agile team, the SDET is responsible for translating business requirements into testable scenarios, contributing to BDD specifications, and ensuring complete functional and regression test coverage. The ideal candidate has solid programming fundamentals in JavaScript/TypeScript, working knowledge of automation frameworks, and a passion for shipping high-quality software. While this role operates under the guidance of senior engineers, the individual is expected to take ownership of their test areas, participate in continuous improvement initiatives, and actively collaborate with developers, product owners, and other QE peers to drive quality outcomes.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain automated test suites for web, API, and mobile applications.
  • Collaborate closely with developers, product managers, and QE peers in Agile teams to define and build test coverage for stories.
  • Participate in test design reviews and ensure adequate unit, integration, and system-level coverage.
  • Write scalable, maintainable, and reusable test automation code (primarily in TypeScript/JavaScript).
  • Execute functional, regression, and exploratory tests during development sprints.
  • Validate RESTful APIs using tools like Postman, Swagger, or API test frameworks.
  • Assist with integrating test automation into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
  • Triaging and debugging test failures, and reporting high-quality defects with traceability.
  • Document and track bugs and test cases using standard tools (Jira, Qmetry, etc.).
  • Provide test coverage metrics and participate in go/no-go decisions.
  • Comply with health and safety guidelines and rules; managers should also ensure compliance across their teams.
  • Protect Chamberlain Group's reputation by keeping information confidential.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reading professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing related results and participating on projects as needed.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in QE with at least 2+ years in automation (UI/API).
  • Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and test frameworks like Playwright, WebDriverIO, or Cypress.
  • Hands-on experience in BDD tools (e.g., Cucumber, Behave, SpecFlow).
  • Experience working with REST APIs, JSON payloads, and API mocking tools.
  • Good understanding of Git, version control, and branching strategies.
  • Exposure to DevOps pipelines and cloud environments (AWS/Azure).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Solid knowledge of QE concepts and the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Understanding of shift-left testing principles, quality gates, and test pyramid.
  • Familiarity with mobile testing (Appium or similar tools) and real/emulator devices.
  • Good communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and handle multiple priorities

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • ISTQB or relevant QA certification.
  • Experience with performance testing tools (e.g., JMeter) is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exposure to AI-assisted testing tools.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS or Azure).
  • Understanding of test management tools like TestRail or QMetry.
  • Cloud testing knowledge in SaaS applications.
The pay range for this position is $64,000.00 - $120,850.00; base pay offered may vary depending on a number of factors including, but not limited to, the position offered, location, education, training, and/or experience.
