What is a software development engineer in test?

A Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) is a professional who combines software development skills with expertise in testing to ensure the quality of software products. SDETs design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks, write test scripts, and work closely with developers to identify and resolve defects early in the software development lifecycle. They play a critical role in integrating testing into the development process, improving test coverage, and enabling continuous integration and delivery. SDETs often have strong programming abilities and a deep understanding of both software engineering and quality assurance best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development engineer in test?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), you need a solid background in software engineering principles, programming skills (often in languages like Java, Python, or C#), and a strong understanding of testing methodologies. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (such as Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG), CI/CD tools, and sometimes certifications like ISTQB are typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help SDETs collaborate with developers and identify issues efficiently. These skills are crucial to ensure robust, scalable, and high-quality software products through efficient test design and automation.

How does a software development engineer in test typically collaborate with developers and QA teams during the software development lifecycle?

As an SDET, you'll work closely with both software developers and quality assurance teams throughout the development process. Your role involves participating in design and code reviews to ensure testability, creating automated test frameworks, and writing test cases alongside developers. You'll also help identify bugs early, contribute to continuous integration pipelines, and facilitate communication between development and QA to ensure high-quality releases. This collaborative environment allows you to bridge the gap between coding and testing, making you a key player in delivering reliable software.

Job description

Your opportunity

At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together. We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).

Workplace Services Engineering supports financial solutions that help millions of workplace participants plan, save, invest, and build stronger financial futures. As a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test, you will design scalable quality solutions for critical workplace applications and help modernize how teams build, validate, and release reliable technology.

You will use Quality Assurance, Java, REST APIs, DevOps, SQL, Cloud Services Management, Generative AI, and Communication to build quality into delivery from the start. Your work will help teams detect risk earlier, improve automation coverage, strengthen platform stability and resilience, and deliver faster, safer change.

You will serve as a hands-on quality engineering partner for one or more Scrum teams, collaborating with engineers, architects, product owners, and business partners. This is an opportunity to influence technical decisions, raise engineering standards, and help shape a quality culture where people learn, experiment responsibly, and succeed together.

What you have

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated Quality Assurance expertise in defining risk-based strategies across UI, API, integration, regression, and performance testing to support reliable release decisions.
  • Advanced Java capability, including practical use of object-oriented principles and clean-code practices to build reusable, maintainable automation solutions.
  • Advanced REST APIs capability, including automated validation of contracts, payloads, errors, dependencies, and business rules to identify defects early.
  • Advanced DevOps capability, including integration of automated tests with Git-based continuous delivery pipelines for fast, repeatable feedback.
  • Advanced SQL capability to validate relational data, transaction state, test data, and end-to-end business outcomes.
  • Ability to communicate complex quality risks, evidence, and recommendations clearly to technical and business partners.
  • Hands-on experience building scalable UI and API automation frameworks with technologies such as Selenium and REST Assured.
  • Working knowledge of load testing, performance concepts such as P95, and tools such as JMeter, BlazeMeter, or LoadRunner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience applying Cloud Services Management practices to testing on platforms such as PCF, GCP, or AWS.
  • Experience using Generative AI to improve test design, code quality, automation maintenance, documentation, or defect analysis with appropriate human validation.
  • Experience with parallel execution and cloud-based test infrastructure such as Sauce Labs.
  • Knowledge of data modeling, test data management, MongoDB, or infrastructure-as-a-service concepts as they relate to application testing.
  • Familiarity with Jira, Zephyr, Confluence, Bamboo, Bitbucket, or similar engineering collaboration tools.
  • Experience influencing quality outcomes across Agile teams through code reviews, technical documentation, knowledge sharing, and constructive feedback.

Skills evaluated during interviews

Interviews will evaluate Quality Assurance, Java, REST APIs, DevOps, SQL, Cloud Services Management, Generative AI, and Communication. Candidates should be prepared to explain how they applied these skills, the decisions they made, and the measurable quality or delivery outcomes achieved.

Learning Opportunities

  • Deepen knowledge of Schwab workplace platforms, business workflows, quality standards, and the controls that support reliable financial technology.
  • Expand cloud-based test execution, performance engineering, service virtualization, test data management, observability, and platform resilience capabilities.
  • Build practical expertise in responsible AI-assisted testing, including prompt development, output validation, code review, and measurable workflow improvement.
  • Grow influence through architecture discussions, cross-team quality leadership, technical communication, mentoring, and continuous improvement.

Skills gained through training and experience

Through structured onboarding, team knowledge sharing, and hands-on delivery, you will develop deeper knowledge of Schwab workplace products, internal engineering practices, platform architecture, risk controls, and quality expectations. The role will also provide opportunities to strengthen Cloud Services Management, Generative AI, performance engineering, and technical influence as the platform evolves.

Skill Development Values

We value curiosity, accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning. You will be encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, share knowledge, test new ideas responsibly, use feedback to improve, and build skills that expand both your impact and your career. At Schwab, quality is a shared responsibility, strong outcomes come from succeeding together, and your growth is supported as you own your tomorrow.

"In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities."
