Software Development Engineer In Test Sdet Lead information

What are some common challenges faced by a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) Lead when managing test automation initiatives across multiple teams?

As an SDET Lead, you may encounter challenges such as ensuring consistent automation standards across diverse teams, balancing test coverage with project deadlines, and managing the integration of automated tests into continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. Additionally, fostering collaboration between developers and testers and keeping up with evolving testing frameworks can be demanding. Effective communication, strong leadership, and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving bottlenecks are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring high-quality software delivery.

What are Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) Leads?

Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) Leads are professionals who combine advanced software engineering skills with expertise in quality assurance and testing. They lead teams responsible for designing, developing, and executing automated tests to ensure the quality of software products. SDET Leads also collaborate closely with developers, product managers, and QA teams to define testing strategies, improve test processes, and mentor junior SDETs. Their goal is to ensure that software releases are reliable, scalable, and meet both functional and non-functional requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) Lead, and why are they important?

To excel as an SDET Lead, you need expertise in software testing methodologies, programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C#), and a thorough understanding of QA processes, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with automation frameworks (like Selenium or Appium), CI/CD tools (such as Jenkins), and knowledge of test management systems are commonly required, along with relevant certifications like ISTQB. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills help guide teams and foster collaboration across development and QA functions. These combined skills ensure high-quality software delivery, efficient test processes, and effective team management in complex development environments.

Job description

Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)

Zetier seeks Software Development Engineers in Test (SDET) to design, build, and maintain scalable automated testing capabilities for embedded hardware, cyber platforms, and operational software systems. This role focuses on developing robust test infrastructure, improving product reliability, and enabling continuous validation across hardware and software solutions. Candidates will develop automated validation frameworks, integrate testing into CI/CD pipelines, and support verification activities spanning low-level firmware, networking systems, and mission-driven software capabilities. Work includes functional, integration, regression, and hardware-in-the-loop testing aligned with quality, operational effectiveness, and compliance objectives.

Required:

  • 5+ years experience in software development or test engineering
  • Strong programming experience in Python, C/C++, and/or Rust
  • Experience deploying automated test frameworks (e.g. pytest, Robot)
  • Experience testing embedded or Linux-based systems platforms
  • Hands-on experience integrating testing into CI/CD pipelines
  • Familiar debugging complex HW/SW system interactions
  • Comfortable writing clear technical documentation (e.g. test reports)
  • Strong communication skills across engineering and customer teams
  • Active U.S. security clearance

Desired:

  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and device automation
  • Experience testing embedded systems, networking devices, or mobile
  • Experience with containerization (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, QEMU)
  • Familiar with network/protocol validation (e.g. Wireshark, Scapy)
  • Experience with RF or wireless systems (e.g. 802.11ac, Zigbee, SDR)
  • Experience testing firmware, drivers, and low-level code/services
  • Exposure to cybersecurity, vulnerability research, or pentest teams
  • Experience with observability, telemetry, or reliability engineering
