A Software Developer Full Stack Developer is a professional who is skilled in both front-end (client-side) and back-end (server-side) development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining all layers of a web application, from user interfaces and user experiences to servers, databases, and application logic. Full stack developers are valuable for their ability to handle multiple aspects of software projects, making them versatile team members. They typically work with a variety of programming languages, frameworks, and technologies to deliver complete, functional applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer full stack developer?

To thrive as a Software Developer Full Stack Developer, you need strong programming skills in both front-end (e.g., JavaScript, HTML, CSS) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java) technologies, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with frameworks like React or Angular, databases (SQL/NoSQL), version control systems (Git), and familiarity with cloud platforms are important, with certifications such as AWS Certified Developer being advantageous. Key responsibilities

  • Own features from discovery through production by partnering with Product and Design to clarify requirements, propose options, implement, and land the work.

  • Implement full-stack solutions using technologies such as NestJS, Node.js, Next.js, React, and PostgreSQL for web applications used by franchisees and customers.

  • Design and maintain robust RESTful APIs, integrate with dependent systems, and ensure product reliability and performance.

Job description

1-800-GOT-JUNK? is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack) to join our Product & Technology team in Kansas City. You will sit on the Omni Channel Product Team, building commercial customer and field-facing products end to end: not only implementing tickets, but clarifying intent with Product and Design, proposing technical approaches, shipping across the stack, and owning quality through release and production.

You will still write and review high-quality code every week. You will also shape how we build: testing, observability, security, and how we use modern AI-assisted development as leverage while keeping strong engineering judgment on the merge bar.

HYBRID WORK ENVIRONMENT

Team members in our Vancouver, Toronto, and Kansas City Junktion Hubs follow a hybrid work model that balances flexibility with in-person collaboration. Employees are expected to work from the office several days each month, with scheduled team collaboration and company connection days to support alignment, teamwork, and business priorities.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

  • Own features from discovery through production: partner with Product and Design to sharpen requirements, call out open questions, propose options, then implement and land the work.
  • Implement full-stack solutions using NestJS, Node.js, Next.js, React, and PostgreSQL for high-performance, scalable web applications used by franchisees and commercial customers.
  • Design and maintain robust RESTful APIs and clear contracts between front end and back end so the product experience stays reliable and fast.
  • Integrate with the systems our products depend on (for example AWS, auth providers, feature flags, and Salesforce-backed workflows) and debug across those boundaries when something breaks.
  • Use feature flags, staged rollouts, and solid defaults so we can ship safely and learn in production.
  • Build and maintain tests and CI/CD (for example GitHub Actions) so quality is owned by the team that writes the code, not bolted on at the end.
  • Use observability tools such as Datadog to understand production behaviour, troubleshoot issues, and improve reliability.
  • Provide technical leadership day to day: design notes when decisions will outlive a sprint, thoughtful code reviews, mentoring peers, and raising the bar on craft.
  • Follow security and compliance practices appropriate for customer-facing and multi-brand platforms (including careful handling of sensitive data).
  • Write clear documentation and tickets so the next person (including future you) can move faster.
  • Continuously improve how we build: coding standards, testing strategy, performance, and how we use AI coding tools without outsourcing judgment to the model.
  • Stay curious about emerging web and platform practices, and bring practical ideas back to the team.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE

Must-have

  • 5+ years of full-stack (or strong FE + solid BE / reverse) experience shipping production web products, with clear ownership of outcomes, not only individual tickets.
  • Strong TypeScript / modern JavaScript across UI and API work; hands-on depth with Next.js, React, and Node.js (NestJS experience is a strong plus).
  • Strong PostgreSQL skills: modelling, querying, and integrating databases into real applications.
  • Solid experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs; comfort working across service and UI boundaries.
  • Experience with CI/CD (for example GitHub Actions), automated tests, and Git-based workflows.
  • Practical experience with Docker / containerized delivery and AWS (or similar cloud) for real applications.
  • Familiarity with observability (Datadog or similar) and a bias toward diagnosing production issues with evidence.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication: you can work with Product, Design, and other engineers when requirements are incomplete, and still drive a clear path forward.
  • Comfort in an Agile product team: grooming, spikes when the unknown is real, and finishing outcomes.

Mindset we hire for

  • Product engineer instincts: you care about user/business outcomes, tradeoffs, and rollout risk, not only “ticket done.”
  • Independent engineering judgment: you can design, debug, and review without relying on AI as a crutch. We use AI tools to move faster; we do not hire for prompt-only delivery.
  • Mentorship and review quality: you raise peers’ work through clear feedback and shared standards.

Nice to have

  • NestJS, LaunchDarkly (or similar feature flags), Auth0/Okta, queue/worker patterns (for example BullMQ), Playwright or strong E2E habits.
  • Salesforce integration experience (consuming Salesforce as a system of record; Apex specialist not required).
  • Design-system contribution, multi-tenant / franchise-style domain experience.
  • GraphQL experience if you have it (not required for day-to-day on this team).

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Competitive Salary (Actual salary offered will be commensurate with education, experience and internal parity).
  • Total Compensation Package designed to support your financial, personal, and professional well-being. This includes:
    • Participation in our Company Profit Sharing Program
    • Comprehensive Extended Health & Dental Benefits
    • Generous Paid Time Off, including annual vacation and personal days
    • Hybrid Work Environment, offering flexibility to work both remotely and from our corporate offices
    • Professional Development Opportunities to support ongoing career growth
    • Access to Health and Wellness Programs, including gym facilities at our corporate head office
