Job description

We are seeking an HR Data Analyst to join our team and play a critical role in transforming complex employee data into actionable insights for HR leadership and partners across the University. This position will leverage analytics tools and platforms to analyze large HR datasets, develop comprehensive reporting solutions, and drive data-informed decision-making across the University.
In this role, you will partner closely with HR leadership and stakeholders to understand their analytical needs - often starting from ambiguous or loosely defined requirements - and translate those needs into concrete technical solutions, while distilling the resulting complexity into clear, actionable insights for non-technical audiences. You will use SQL to merge, transform, and analyze data across multiple systems, including Oracle HCM, Taleo, Salesforce, and third-party benefits vendor platforms. You will also build automated data workflows that streamline business processes and improve data quality across the team's reporting pipeline. And you will build, update, and maintain dashboards in Tableau to visualize this data. You will also collaborate closely with Pitt Digital's broader technical team, who manage enterprise data and reporting platforms across the University, to ensure your analyses and dashboards are built on reliable, well-governed data infrastructure.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional experience in data analysis or a related role
  • Experience with HR/organizational people data (e.g., headcount, turnover, recruiting metrics) and the judgment to interpret it correctly, avoid common pitfalls (e.g., data lag, org restructuring effects, voluntary vs. involuntary turnover), and communicate findings clearly to non-technical audiences
  • Proficient in SQL, including ability to write joins, understand and write complex queries
  • Understands the concept of data grain (e.g., one row per employee vs. one row per employee per pay period) and applies it to write SQL queries that avoid duplication, incorrect joins, or misleading aggregations
  • Strong experience with visualization tool (Tableau preferred) for dashboard & report development, including calculated fields, parameters & advanced visualizations
  • Working knowledge of Python, R, or similar programming languages for data manipulation & analysis
  • Strong knowledge of data manipulation, cleaning & wrangling techniques
  • Experience with Alteryx for data automation or transformation preferred
