Software Developer Contractor information

What is a software developer contractor?

Software Developer Contractors are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to design, develop, and maintain software applications for clients or companies. Unlike full-time employees, contractors typically work under a contract for a specific period or for the duration of a project. They may work independently, through agencies, or as part of a consulting firm, and often have specialized skills to meet specific project needs. This arrangement offers flexibility for both the developer and the employer, allowing organizations to scale their technical resources as needed.

What are some common challenges software developer contractors face when integrating with existing teams?

Software developer contractors often join projects mid-stream and must quickly adapt to unfamiliar codebases, workflows, and team dynamics. A common challenge is building rapport with full-time staff and understanding company-specific coding standards or tools. Contractors are expected to be proactive in communicating, asking questions, and clarifying requirements to ensure smooth collaboration. Being flexible and open to feedback helps contractors deliver quality work while navigating these initial hurdles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer contractor, and why are they important?

To excel as a Software Developer Contractor, you need strong programming abilities, problem-solving skills, and a solid understanding of software development methodologies, often backed by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript are commonly required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer. Excellent communication, time management, and adaptability set top contractors apart, enabling them to quickly integrate with diverse teams and projects. These skills are essential for delivering high-quality, timely solutions in dynamic and varied client environments.

The Opportunity

WHM Structural Engineers is seeking a Project Engineer to lead the day-to-day technical delivery of structural building projects. Working with the guidance of a Principal-in-Charge or Associate, the Project Engineer manages project teams and deliverables, mentors Junior and Intermediate Engineers, coordinates closely with Project Drafters, and serves as a primary technical contact for clients and consultants.

This role is suited to an experienced structural engineer who is ready to take greater responsibility for project delivery, team development, and technical leadership while continuing to contribute directly to structural design.

They are comfortable managing multiple priorities, providing clear technical direction, mentoring others, and working directly with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal project teams.

They communicate clearly, follow through on commitments, and understand how planning, coordination, quality, and timely technical review contribute to successful and profitable projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead structural design and project delivery from concept through design completion, with technical support during construction.
  • Manage project scope, budget hours, schedule, staffing, quality, and deliverables within established project parameters.
  • Direct and mentor Junior and Intermediate Structural Engineers and coordinate engineering and drafting priorities with the Project Drafter.
  • Review calculations, models, drawings, specifications, and reports for accuracy, coordination, constructability, and code compliance.
  • Lead day-to-day coordination with clients, architects, consultants, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Contribute practical ideas that improve WHM's technical standards, tools, details, and design practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural focus.
  • Registered as a P.Eng. with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
  • 5 - 8 years of structural building-design experience.
  • Strong technical experience in concrete or wood construction; multiple materials are an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead project teams, manage deliverables, and mentor others.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian building codes and material standards.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with structural analysis software and Bluebeam.

Compensation and Benefits

$96,000 - $130,000 per year

Final compensation will reflect the successful candidate's relevant experience, technical capabilities, project leadership experience, and alignment with the role's requirements.

  • Extended health and dental benefits.
  • Paid professional dues.
  • Annual health spending account.
  • Professional development support.
  • Paid vacation.
  • Free on-site parking.
  • Direct access to senior leaders and room to grow into broader technical and leadership responsibilities.
  • Meaningful responsibility and opportunities to grow into broader technical, project, and leadership roles.

This is a full-time, office-based position at WHM's Burnaby office.
