Software Developer Back End information

What is the difference between Software Developer Back End vs Software Developer Front End?

AspectSoftware Developer Back EndSoftware Developer Front End
Required SkillsProgramming languages like Java, Python, Ruby; server, database, API developmentHTML, CSS, JavaScript; UI/UX design; client-side scripting
Work EnvironmentServer-side, database management, API developmentWeb browsers, user interfaces, client-side applications
Common UsageBuilding and maintaining server logic, databases, APIsDesigning and implementing user interfaces and experiences

While both roles involve web development, Software Developer Back End focuses on server-side logic, databases, and APIs, whereas Software Developer Front End concentrates on user interfaces and client-side interactions. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or collaboration focus within software development teams.

Are back end software developers still in demand?

Back end software developers are currently in high demand due to the ongoing need for server-side programming, database management, and API development across industries. Skills in languages like Java, Python, and Node.js, along with experience in cloud platforms, enhance job prospects in this field.

What does a back-end software developer do?

A back-end software developer designs, builds, and maintains the server-side components of applications, including databases, APIs, and server logic. They work with programming languages like Java, Python, or Node.js and often use tools such as version control systems and frameworks to ensure efficient data processing and application performance.

Job description

Jobgether is hiring a remote candidate for Backend Developer Level 3. This is a full time position. Work location: USA. The role typically involves technologies such as TypeScript, Node.js, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Kafka, Azure. This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Developer Level 3 based in United States. This role is an opportunity to build and operate high-scale backend systems within a modern, cloud-native engineering environment. You will work primarily with Node.js and TypeScript while designing distributed, event-driven services that need to remain reliable under demanding production workloads. The position combines hands-on software development with meaningful ownership of architecture, operational excellence, and technical decision-making. You’ll work extensively with Microsoft Azure, Kubernetes, messaging systems, APIs, and observability tooling. Strong systems thinking and the ability to operate effectively in ambiguous environments will be essential to your success. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced backend engineer who is ready to take ownership of complex platforms and contribute at a senior technical level.

Accountabilities
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js and TypeScript, with a strong focus on clean, maintainable, and reliable code.
  • Design and evolve large-scale distributed systems and microservices supporting business-critical workflows across a broad operational environment.
  • Build cloud-native applications on Microsoft Azure, leveraging services such as Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure Functions, Azure Service Bus, and Cosmos DB.
  • Develop event-driven services and asynchronous processing pipelines while addressing idempotency, message ordering, retries, dead-letter handling, consumer lag, and other distributed-system concerns.
  • Build and maintain high-performance REST APIs that support customer- and associate-facing applications and integrate effectively with systems owned by other teams.
  • Diagnose production performance and reliability issues using logs, traces, metrics, distributed tracing, and application performance monitoring rather than relying solely on local reproduction.
  • Improve observability, scalability, resilience, capacity management, and operational efficiency across backend systems.
  • Contribute to technical design discussions, architecture reviews, and engineering decisions within established system architectures.
  • Take significant ownership of technical initiatives and help coordinate engineering activities, with opportunities to contribute to standups, Scrum ceremonies, solution architecture, and technical leadership.
  • Partner with Product, UX, Mobile, Frontend, and other engineering teams to develop APIs and services that deliver effective user experiences.
  • Champion automated testing, CI/CD, DevOps practices, production readiness, incident response, and operational excellence.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and AI-assisted development tools that can improve engineering productivity, software quality, and delivery speed.
Requirements
  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience focused on building and operating backend applications.
  • Strong and recent production experience with Node.js and TypeScript, including asynchronous programming patterns and runtime performance considerations.
  • Proven experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems and microservice architectures in production.
  • Hands-on experience developing and operating asynchronous, message-based systems, with practical knowledge of idempotency, out-of-order delivery, retries, dead-letter handling, and consumer lag.
  • Strong experience developing and maintaining RESTful APIs and working with NoSQL databases, including partitioning strategies and consistency tradeoffs.
  • Strong and recent hands-on experience developing and operating production applications on Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve production issues using telemetry, including logs, metrics, traces, and application performance monitoring.
  • Strong understanding of operational excellence, reliability, resilience, observability, performance, and scalable system design.
  • Ability to work effectively across team boundaries, proactively seek information, and collaborate with teams responsible for interconnected systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with engineering, product, and business stakeholders.
  • Prior technical leadership or experience architecting solutions for engineering teams is a strong advantage.
  • Experience with Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure Service Bus, Kafka, or comparable messaging platforms is preferred.
  • Experience with Cosmos DB or another partitioned NoSQL database, NestJS or a comparable Node.js framework, Kubernetes autoscaling, Helm, and CI/CD pipelines is a plus.
  • Experience with high-throughput systems where latency, scalability, and cost per request are important engineering considerations is beneficial.
  • Experience implementing observability with OpenTelemetry and platforms such as Dynatrace, Datadog, or New Relic is preferred.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical applications in large enterprise environments is an advantage.
Benefits
  • 12+ month contract opportunity with the possibility of extension.
  • 100% remote position open to candidates working from anywhere in the United States.
  • Opportunity to join a distributed engineering team working across multiple locations.
  • High level of ownership and autonomy within a role designed to replace an experienced senior team member.
  • Opportunity to take on technical leadership responsibilities and influence architecture and engineering practices.
  • Exposure to modern cloud-native technologies including Node.js, TypeScript, Microsoft Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, messaging platforms, and observability tools.
  • Opportunity to work on large-scale distributed systems and mission-critical backend applications.
  • Collaborative environment with cross-functional exposure to Product, UX, Mobile, Frontend, and engineering teams.
  • Opportunity to explore AI-assisted development tools and emerging technologies that improve engineering productivity and software quality.

Skills required for this role include TypeScript, Node.js, Kubernetes, and related tools for day-to-day development. Seniority level: Senior.
