What is a software architect manager?

A Software Architect Manager is a senior-level professional who oversees the design and implementation of complex software systems while also managing a team of software architects and developers. They are responsible for setting technical direction, establishing best practices, and ensuring that software solutions align with business goals. In addition to technical expertise, they provide leadership, mentorship, and project management to ensure project success. Their role bridges the gap between technical architecture and team management, making them crucial in large-scale software development environments.

How does a software architect manager typically balance hands-on technical work with managerial responsibilities?

A Software Architect Manager often splits their time between overseeing architectural decisions and managing a team of developers and architects. While they remain involved in high-level technical design and code reviews, much of their role also involves mentoring team members, facilitating communication between stakeholders, and ensuring project alignment with business goals. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management and the ability to delegate effectively, as well as staying updated on both technical trends and team dynamics. This balance allows them to drive technical excellence while fostering a collaborative and productive team environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software architect manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Architect Manager, you need deep expertise in software design principles, architecture patterns, and significant experience in leading software development projects, often backed by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with cloud platforms, architectural modeling tools, and certifications like TOGAF or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are commonly required. Strong leadership, effective communication, and strategic problem-solving set outstanding candidates apart in this role. These skills ensure that complex software systems are robust, scalable, and delivered efficiently while aligning teams with organizational goals.

Job description

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Cloud Infrastructure Architect to design, build, and maintain secure, scalable, and highly available infrastructure supporting mission-critical applications. This role is responsible for architecting and administering both on-premises and AWS cloud environments while driving automation, infrastructure-as-code, and continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate combines deep expertise in Linux systems administration, cloud technologies, networking, and DevOps practices with a strong understanding of enterprise application infrastructure.

Working closely with software architects, infrastructure teams, and technical stakeholders, you will translate application architecture into reliable operational environments, ensure compliance with security standards, and implement modern automation strategies that improve efficiency, scalability, and system reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage application server provisioning through automated means.

  • Create, edit, and maintain Ansible provisioning and patching for both on-premises infrastructure and AWS Cloud environments.

  • Create, edit, and maintain load balancing and load throttling rules for network traffic supporting applications hosted on both NLM infrastructure and AWS Cloud.

  • Create, edit, and maintain AWS CloudFormation, AWS Config, and AWS Lambda scripts for application servers.

  • Coordinate with technical infrastructure teams to ensure work is completed in accordance with established Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

  • Create and maintain approximately 2,500 firewall rules supporting application network communications.

  • Manage, maintain, and administer application server platforms including Python, Java, Ruby, Node.js, and PHP on CentOS Linux operating systems.

  • Research, recommend, and implement continuous improvements to application server environments, with an emphasis on security, automation, patch management, and configuration management.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills with the flexibility to shift priorities while managing multiple initiatives.

  • Demonstrated experience analyzing and creating IT infrastructure from architectural design documents.

  • Demonstrated experience in systems analysis, systems architecture, and systems design.

  • Demonstrated experience translating design documentation into operational infrastructure.

  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain "as-provisioned" infrastructure documentation.

  • Demonstrated experience training and mentoring software architects on infrastructure limitations, design tradeoffs, and deployment considerations within a FISMA Moderate environment.

  • Demonstrated experience working in Agile environments using Kanban methodologies.

  • Demonstrated experience researching and evaluating emerging technologies and implementation strategies.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience administering Linux-based server environments.

  • Demonstrated scripting experience using Shell (BASH, KSH, TCSH) and either Python or Ruby.

  • Demonstrated experience provisioning and administering Apache HTTPD, Apache Tomcat, Python/Django applications, and Ruby on Rails applications.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of common networking protocols including TCP, DNS, FTP, TLS, HTTP/HTTPS, along with JSON, XML, YAML, and infrastructure support tools such as Ansible and Nagios.

  • Demonstrated AWS Cloud Operations experience equivalent to an AWS Certified Professional.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting OCCS or organizations of similar size, scope, and complexity while partnering with internal customers to automate operational functions.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
