Software Architect Director information

What is a software architect director?

A Software Architect Director is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the architectural design and technical direction of software projects within an organization. They manage teams of architects and developers, ensure alignment with business goals, and set standards for software quality, scalability, and security. In addition to technical expertise, this role requires strong leadership and communication skills to guide teams and collaborate with stakeholders. Software Architect Directors play a crucial role in shaping the technology strategy and ensuring successful software delivery.

How does a software architect director typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during large-scale projects?

A Software Architect Director frequently works alongside product managers, engineering teams, and business stakeholders to ensure that technical solutions align with business goals. This role involves leading architectural reviews, facilitating communication between development teams, and providing strategic guidance on technology choices. Effective collaboration often requires translating complex technical concepts into actionable plans for non-technical team members while mentoring senior engineers and architects. Regular meetings, documentation, and alignment sessions are key for maintaining project momentum and addressing challenges early.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software architect director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Architect Director, you need deep expertise in software architecture, system design, and a strong background in computer science, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree and significant industry experience. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), architectural frameworks (such as TOGAF), and modern development tools is typically required. Leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for guiding engineering teams and aligning technology with business objectives. These skills ensure scalable, efficient solutions and successful project delivery at an organizational level.

Company Description
eIQ Mobility is working to accelerate the electrification of the transportation industry, specifically fleets, through optimized planning, delivery, and operation of electric mobility services at scale. Our vision is to provide zero-emission mobility with zero risk to our fleet customers.
Job Description
eIQ Mobility is looking for a Software Architect to lead development of our flagship platform. This is a rare opportunity to take on a key role with an early stage start-up and engage in the exciting, and red-hot, electric mobility market.
As Software Architect at eIQ Mobility, you will spearhead the design, development and launch of our flagship, cloud-based, software platform. You will build your team and ensure that the solution is scalable, reliable, and secure while ensuring achievement of desired business objectives. You demonstrate a strong entrepreneurial spirit, steadfast customer focus, and collaborative mindset. You embrace innovation, challenging work, and get excited about building things from the ground up.
Responsibilities
  • Analyze business/product requirements to define and design the platform architecture and systems integration.
  • Design, plan, and manage all development operations related to continuous integration, continuous delivery, and process automation.
  • Manage orchestration, configuration, and provisioning automation.
  • Build automation tools and frameworks for on-demand deployment environments, application definition, and application monitoring.
  • Lead recruitment and hiring efforts for technical team supporting platform development while maintaining a strong individual development contribution.
  • Present architecture and design to internal/external stakeholders. Able to communicate complex technologies in a simple manner to all teams, including non-technical.
  • Support prototype and proof-of-concept work without losing focus on the big picture architecture.
  • Develop and maintain architecture and platform documentation.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field (Masters or PhD preferred but not required).
  • At least 5 years of experience as a software architect.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and leading software developers with a strong professional network, recruiting capability, and ability to limit team turnover.
  • Full-stack development experience building scalable web applications.
  • Experience building enterprise scale applications on one, or more, major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.). Experience with GCP highly preferred.
  • Experience with test-driven development practices.
  • Ability to work and adapt to aggressive and dynamic objectives.
  • An innovator that seeks novel, and scalable, approaches to solve customer pain.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate the design value and economic value of recommended architectures.
  • Strong focus on customer experience with discipline to secure on-time releases.

Bonus Qualifications & Characteristics
  • Experience managing software engineering teams both onsite and remote
  • Passion for clean-tech

Additional Information
Location: This position will be located in Oakland.
eIQ Mobility is an early stage startup motivated to accelerate the electrification of fleet vehicles. During our incubation we executed 250+ customer interviews to understand their pain in moving to electric vehicles. Our initial product, the electrification planning and decision platform we call EValuate, is a direct outcome of those interviews. Our longer term vision is to provide fleet electrification as a service, allowing our customers to move to zero-emissions with zero risk. We are very proud to have received initial seed funding from Schneider Electric Ventures.
