Job Summary

Roots Through Recovery is seeking a full-time, Registered or Certified SUD Counselor/Case Manager with experience working with substance use and co-occurring mental health for our outpatient program in Long Beach, CA. Field-Based opportunities are also available, working with either adolescents and families or adults in various settings.

In this role, you will provide ongoing support for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders, address triggers, teach communication and healthy coping skills, assist patients in addressing maladaptive behaviors, and guide them through crises as you develop their resilience. Roots Through Recovery provides professional development for our staff to help them grow in their role, and up to 4 hours per month of paid time to attend continuing education.


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Direct work with clients and families working to manage and/or overcome substance abuse and co-occurring issues
  • Utilize assessments and self-assessments to map out client wellness and recovery plan and serve as an accountability partner and coach
  • Hold clear boundaries and communicated directly and effectively with clients and their families regarding the change and growth process
  • Develop strong, healthy relationships with clients in order to support and challenge them to do the tough work of changing and thriving
  • Teach and model hard and soft life skills
  • Maintain fluency in supportive community resources and develop strong working relationships with community treatment and clinical service providers
  • Exhibit high levels of self-awareness by continually assessing performance, identifying challenges and needs, and developing areas of opportunities
  • Maintain complete and accurate records
  • Model a growth mentality and be doing your own growth work in parallel with the clients and familys work
  • Contribute to the mission and vision of the company

Qualifications Required:

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or Equivalent is required for consideration.
  • Minimum 2 years Case Management or SUD counselor experience working in the drug and alcohol treatment and/or mental health treatment industry.
  • Experience working with both private insurance and Drug Medi-Cal a plus.
  • Knowledge of and fluency in the use of recovery tools, recovery resources, insight into motivation and behavior, understanding of the role of coaching as a change agent.
  • Registered or Certified as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor.
  • Bilingual candidates will be highly considered.
  • Case Management experience PLUS coaching and leadership experience a significant plus.
  • The ideal candidate is self-motivated, coachable, trustworthy, ethical and works well both as a team member and independently.

  • Expertise in these areas; addiction recovery, relapse prevention, community resources, legal issues, workforce development and coaching.
  • Understands how to navigate and roll with resistance and deploy techniques to enhance motivation to change.
  • Experience in compassionate crisis intervention, and ability to de-escalate clients.
  • Ability to serve as a role model, positive mentor and support person.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Self-directed, proactive, intelligent, knowledge of curriculum and assessment, multi-tasker, problem solving skills, professional written and verbal communication skills, ability to connect with students with patience and compassion.
