Job description
Primary Purpose Provide individual and small group tutoring to TRiO students as needed. Assist TRiO students in achieving academic success by helping to clarify course content, offer encouragement, and develop study skills. Other assistance may include: reviewing class material, discussing the text, formulating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems.
Tutoring is a supplement to classroom teaching. Tutors are not expected to know everything about the subject for which they tutor. Work hours vary according to the tutor's availability, but will not exceed 20 hours per week.
The Southwestern tutoring program is internationally certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Tutors may earn up to three certifications (Initial, Advanced, and Master) by completing tutor training and tutoring hours. All tutors who wish to work for Southwestern are required to complete tutor training.
This position is for the 2026-2027 Academic Year. Description of Essential Functions Tutoring (90% of Time) Tutor students in approved subjects. Support and encourage independent learning by applying training and following expected procedures.
Coordinate meetings and schedules with tutees as appropriate. Serve as a resource for other tutors in same academic subject. Complete required Tutor Training courses (ED 136, 137, and 138) during the first year of tutoring.
Training courses are offered at no cost and students will earn one credit for each course completed. Complete and hand in all required documentation following CRLA and TRiO SSS guidelines. Be punctual for all scheduled tutoring sessions.
General Duties (10% of Time) Participate in new tutor orientation (once). Participate in monthly in-service trainings. Participate in the orientation program for new TRiO SSS participants.
Maintain a clean workspace. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Must be a current participant or alumni of Southwestern's TRIO SSS program. High school diploma or equivalent plus earned college credits.
Must have earned an "A" or "B" in desired tutoring subject AND be recommended by an instructor. Additionally, tutors must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Must be able to work effectively with students of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, demonstrating an ability to work with others in a courteous and cooperative fashion
