Description
FULL-TIME ENGLISH/HUMANITIES/SOCIAL SCIENCES INSTRUCTOR reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The English/Humanities/Social Sciences Instructor is responsible for classroom instruction in various English/Humanities/Social Sciences courses and assists in updating current curriculum; providing quality instruction for a diverse student population; and performing instructional duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Philosophy, Mission, Core Values, policies and procedures of the College.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach five assigned English/Humanities/Social Sciences courses per semester in accordance with college's workload policy; maintains written instructional standards; facilitates instruction using alternative delivery methods as needed; informs students in writing of instructional standards; posts and maintains ten office hours per week; participates in the assessment of student learning outcomes; establishes, maintains and submits accurate student and instructional records in a timely manner;
  • Teach English/Humanities/Social Sciences courses from developmental through advanced, such as courses in the following areas:
    1. English Composition I (required)
    2. American History
    3. Public Speaking
    4. Introduction to Sociology
    5. Critical Thinking
    6. Integrated Reading/Writing
    7. Short Story and Poetry
  • Provides academic advising and course selection assistance to assigned technical program students;
  • Assists in the preparation of course proposals, curriculum, instructional materials, and evaluation tools; reviews and updates course outlines, textbooks, and course procedures for English/Humanities/Social Sciences courses; assists with curriculum updates;
  • Applies and maintains standards of quality operating methods, processes, systems, and procedures; implements changes as necessary to maintain a successful English/Humanities/Social Sciences program; integrates professional training to continuously improve program quality;
  • Participates in English/Humanities/Social Sciences course scheduling, department, division and college meetings; utilizes retention and student engagement systems in collaboration with the Dean of Student Success, Instructional Coach, Division Chair, along with other faculty and student success staff; participate in initiatives to review and maintain the integrity of department curriculum;
  • Serves on college committees as required by the faculty collective bargaining agreement;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned;
  • Maintains compliance with all College policies and procedures.

Typical Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:
  • Knowledge of writing assessment practices is required;
  • Experience teaching English Composition is required;
  • Experience teaching American History is desired;
  • Experience instructing students from diverse cultures and/or backgrounds and students with diverse learning needs;
  • Experience teaching in multiple course modalities (asynchronous/hybrid/etc.) is preferred;
  • Experience working in Canvas or other learning management system is preferred;
  • Demonstrated professionalism and interpersonal skills are essential;
  • Expected to accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner and to strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed;
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner;
  • Ability to effectively identify and resolve problems and to maintain strict confidentially related to sensitive information;
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and take appropriate action to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public;
  • Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail.
  • Skill in using authentic assessment to evaluate students' needs and progress; and
  • Skill in integrating technology into curriculum and other educational services.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
  • Master's degree in English, American Studies, History, or a related discipline, or a master's degree with 18 credit hours in English/Humanities/Social Science courses is required
  • At least two years' experience teaching college-level writing
  • At least two years' experience teaching college-level English, Humanities, or Social Sciences
  • Terminal degree in Education, English, American Studies, History, or a related discipline is preferred

  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
  • Conditions may require walking, stooping, climbing, pushing, pulling, heavy lifting (less than or equal to 50 pounds), high climbing, bending, working in awkward positions handling equipment and materials.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 10 lbs.
  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone or videoconferencing system
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
