Job description

Kaua’i Now is an all-digital, independent news site that covers the Hawaiian Island of Kaua’i. It is part of the Hawaii-based Pacific Media Group, which also includes Big Island Now, Maui Now and 21 radio stations.

We are seeking an energetic, full-time general assignment reporter to be part of our growing team. The position enables a reporter to pick the most important, most interesting stories happening on the island. The position requires living on Kaua’i or being willing to relocate to Kaua’i.

As a Kauai Now reporter you will:

  • Report, research and write news stories, breaking news and features.
  • Cover all things important to the people who live on the island and the tourists who visit it. This includes government, crime, business, environment, culture, education and tourism.
  • Develop sources and come up with your own story ideas.
  • Take photographs for your stories, or collected provided photos/art for your stories.
  • Collaborate with other team members of the Pacific Media Group.
  • Produce content for the website, which includes editing/rewriting breaking news releases and other press releases.
  • Posting on the news sites’ social media accounts.

The job is about 80 percent original reporting and 20 percent producing website content and posting on social media.

Requirements for this position:

  • 3+ years of professional experience as a news reporter (Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or other related fields a plus).
  • Ability to write clean, factual and compelling stories
  • Able to work in Wordpress
  • Can take own photographs (Video skills a plus)
  • Work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Be flexible and work as part of a team when needed.

Compensation:

Full-time salary: $55,000 to $60,000, based on experience, and a stipend for Internet, mileage and phone.

The position also includes Full Benefits: health care (medical, dental and vision coverage), paid vacation, paid sick time

Freelancers:

Kaua’i Now also is looking for freelancers. Compensation is paid per story, with the amount based on the difficulty and time required.
