What is a soccer data analyst?

Soccer data analysts are professionals who collect, organize, and interpret data related to soccer matches, players, and teams. They use statistical tools and software to analyze performance metrics, player movements, and tactical patterns. Their insights help coaches, scouts, and management make informed decisions about strategies, player selection, and training. Soccer data analysts play a crucial role in modern football clubs, combining knowledge of the game with expertise in data analysis.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a soccer data analyst?

To thrive as a Soccer Data Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, knowledge of soccer tactics, and a background in statistics or data science, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with data analysis tools like Python, R, SQL, and sports analytics platforms such as Opta or StatsBomb is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for interpreting data and conveying insights to coaches or management. You’ll be the strategic bridge between clients and our Product, Engineering, and Operations teams, ensuring matchday performance, driving project delivery on time and on budget, and spotting commercial upsell opportunities. This is a hands‑on role where strong client partnership and technical fluency with sports‑data ecosystems matter.

Job Playbook (key duties)
  • Serve as the primary client-facing project lead for Americas accounts (e.g., Major League Soccer, U.S. Soccer)
  • Own stakeholder management: external clients and internal Product Owners, Ops, IT, Sales
  • Manage change requests and scope adjustments; coordinate commercial and technical impact assessments
  • Triage client issues and bugs with Product Owners through to resolution; maintain incident logs and post‑mortems
  • Track project budgets and deliver internal reportings
  • Identify upsell potential and support proposal creation and contract discussions
  • Support matchday operations and be available for occasional evening/weekend coverage when needed
First-Quarter Playbook (90–120 days)
  • Establish client cadences, stakeholder maps, and communication rhythms for assigned accounts
  • Stabilize matchday readiness for one or more clients: runbooks, escalation paths, and pre‑match checklists
  • Deliver baseline project KPIs and a reporting cadence (gross margin, revenue, incident counts, on‑time/on‑budget)
Victory KPIs (performance metrics)
  • Project KPIs: gross margin, revenue attainment, number of technical matchday issues, on‑time/on‑budget delivery
  • Client satisfaction, retention, and number of upsell opportunities advanced
  • Reduction in repeat incidents and timely resolution of escalations
Your profileStarter Kit (must-have credentials)
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university (preferred)
  • Minimum 3+ years in client‑facing project management for software or IT/data projects
  • Strong stakeholder management, escalation handling, and client briefing experience
  • Technical understanding of sports data and data ecosystems; ability to translate technical issues for non-technical stakeholders
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Word)
  • Experience with project tools such as JIRA, Confluence, or Asana
  • Calm under pressure in live‑event situations; excellent problem‑solving and multitasking skills
  • Willingness to work evenings/weekends and domestic/international travel for matchday support as needed
  • Local to Dallas‑Fort Worth or willing to relocate
  • Ability to legally work in the U.S. without sponsorship
Bonus Points If You Have
  • Hands‑on experience with soccer data or other live‑sports data systems
  • First experience with AI applications to increase efficiency
  • Familiarity with camera‑based tracking, broadcast‑data operations, or live‑event delivery pipelines
