What is the difference between Soc Level 1 Analyst vs Soc Level 2 Analyst?

AspectSoc Level 1 AnalystSoc Level 2 Analyst
CertificationsBasic security certifications (e.g., CompTIA Security+)Advanced certifications (e.g., GIAC Security Essentials)
Work EnvironmentMonitors security alerts, initial incident responsePerforms in-depth analysis, escalates complex issues
ResponsibilitiesInitial detection, alert triageIncident investigation, root cause analysis

The main difference between a Soc Level 1 Analyst and a Soc Level 2 Analyst lies in their responsibilities and expertise. Level 1 analysts handle initial alerts and basic troubleshooting, while Level 2 analysts perform more detailed investigations and escalate complex issues. Both roles require security knowledge, but Level 2 analysts typically have more experience and advanced certifications.

What is a SOC Level 1 Analyst?

A SOC Level 1 Analyst is an entry-level cybersecurity professional who monitors and analyzes an organization's security systems for potential threats and incidents. Their main responsibilities include reviewing security alerts, triaging incidents, escalating issues to higher-tier analysts, and documenting findings. They play a critical role in the early detection of cyber threats and help maintain the overall security posture of the organization. SOC Level 1 Analysts usually work in Security Operations Centers (SOCs) and use various security tools, such as SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) platforms, to carry out their tasks. This position is ideal for individuals looking to start a career in cybersecurity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SOC Level 1 Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SOC Level 1 Analyst, you need foundational knowledge of cybersecurity principles, incident response processes, and familiarity with network and system administration, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications like CompTIA Security+. Experience with security information and event management (SIEM) tools, ticketing systems, and basic scripting is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help analysts quickly identify and escalate potential threats. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure timely detection of security incidents and accurate reporting, forming the first line of defense in an organization's cybersecurity posture.

What are some common challenges faced by SOC Level 1 Analysts in their daily workflow?

SOC Level 1 Analysts often face the challenge of handling a high volume of security alerts, many of which may be false positives. Quickly triaging these alerts while maintaining accuracy is essential to ensure real threats are identified promptly. Additionally, analysts must communicate effectively with other team members and escalate incidents when necessary, all while continuing to develop their technical skills in a fast-paced, evolving threat landscape. Balancing these responsibilities can be demanding but offers valuable experience for career growth within cybersecurity.

Job description

WHAT YOU DO AT AMD CHANGES EVERYTHING

At AMD, our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences—from AI and data centers, to PCs, gaming and embedded systems. Grounded in a culture of innovation and collaboration, we believe real progress comes from bold ideas, human ingenuity and a shared passion to create something extraordinary. When you join AMD, you’ll discover the real differentiator is our culture. We push the limits of innovation to solve the world’s most important challenges—striving for execution excellence, while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Join us as we shape the future of AI and beyond.  Together, we advance your career.

THE ROLE:

We are seeking a Senior Power Modeling Engineer to drive pre-silicon power modeling and analysis for AMD’s next-generation Embedded x86 SoC platforms. This role plays a critical part in defining use-case-driven power expectations, building SoC-level power models from IP inputs, and enabling informed EDC/TDC, voltage-frequency (VF), and PPA trade-off decisions early in the design cycle.

THE PERSON:

The ideal candidate brings deep hands-on experience with SoC power modeling methodologies and understands how IP-level power characteristics scale to full-chip behavior. This engineer will collaborate closely with SoC architects, power architects, performance teams, and silicon validation teams to ensure accurate power projections and influence architectural direction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

SoC & UseCase Power Modeling
  • Develop and maintain SoC-level power models for Embedded x86 platforms using IP-level inputs (CPU, GPU, fabric, memory, and I/O).

  • Create use-case-driven power models representing automotive, industrial, edge computing, and customer-specific embedded workloads.

  • Translate real-world workloads into model inputs such as activity factors, concurrency, residency, and DVFS states.

PowerFrequency & Electrical Modeling
  • Build and maintain VoltageFrequency (VF) curves across operating corners.
  • Derive and validate EDC / TDC / current limits based on modeled workloads and platform constraints.
  • Perform sensitivity studies across frequency, voltage, workload mix, and power states.
IPtoSoC Model Integration
  • Integrate IPlevel power models into cohesive SoClevel frameworks.
  • Ensure consistency of assumptions across IPs (clocking, power states, gating, DVFS).
  • Identify gaps, inconsistencies, or inaccuracies in IP models and drive closure with IP teams.
Architecture & Tradeoff Analysis
  • Partner with SoC and power architects to influence early architectural decisions.
  • Evaluate power/performance/area tradeoffs for new features, configurations, and SKUs.
  • Support boundingbox analysis and product positioning decisions.
Correlation & Continuous Improvement
  • Support presilicon to postsilicon correlation of power models.
  • Refine models using silicon data, profiling, and validation feedback.
  • Improve modeling methodologies, accuracy targets, and documentation.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Professional experience in power modeling, power estimation, or SoC power analysis
  • Strong understanding of:
    • SoC power architecture and DVFS
    • Static vs dynamic power components
    • EDC / TDC / electrical and thermal constraints
  • Handson experience building SoClevel power models from IPlevel models
  • Experience creating and analyzing VF curves
  • Experience with Embedded or Automotive SoCs
  • Familiarity with x86 CPU, GPU, memory, and fabric power behaviors
  • Exposure to power modeling tools, spreadsheets, or internal frameworks used for presilicon estimation
  • Experience with workloaddriven modeling and benchmark abstraction
  • Strong analytical and scripting skills (Python preferred)
  • Ability to work across architecture, IP, performance, and validation teams
  • Prior involvement in power correlation with silicon
  • Ability to clearly communicate modeling assumptions and results to senior technical stakeholders
ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:
BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field

LOCATION: Austin, TX

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
