Veterinary Student Externship – Webster Groves Animal Hospital

Our hospital offers students the opportunity to learn in a fast-paced, collaborative environment alongside an experienced team of veterinarians, technicians, and support staff.
Position Summary
The Veterinary Student Externship is designed for current veterinary students seeking hands-on clinical experience in a real-world hospital setting. Externs will observe and participate—within their level of training and under direct supervision—in various aspects of companion animal medicine, surgery, emergency care, and client communication.
Learning Opportunities / Responsibilities
  • Assisting veterinarians with patient examinations and case workups
  • Observing and participating in surgeries and anesthetic monitoring
  • Assisting with diagnostics such as radiographs, laboratory testing, and cytology
  • Participating in treatment planning discussions and medical rounds
  • Monitoring hospitalized patients and learning inpatient care protocols
  • Gaining exposure to emergency and urgent care case management
  • Practicing medical record documentation and SOAP note development
  • Strengthening client communication and discharge instruction skills
  • Collaborating with veterinary technicians and support staff to understand workflow and patient care coordination
  • Attending team meetings or doctor rounds when available
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program
  • Good academic standing with veterinary school
  • Strong interest in small animal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, or general practice
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Professional appearance and conduct
