Job Description

Under the supervision of a Laboratory Technologist and/or management, performs a variety of technical tasks to prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination by a Pathologist. Responsibilities include grossing and frozen section preparation in accordance with established, approved protocols, requiring limited independent judgment and review. Assists in training students, new employees, and other hospital personnel.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Prepares (grosses) tissue specimens for processing, including fixation, dehydration, clearing, and embedding in paraffin wax.
  2. Operates tissue processors and embedding centers.
  3. Utilizes a microtome to cut thin sections of tissue from paraffin blocks in accordance with quality requirements and mounts sections onto slides appropriately.
  4. Prepares slides for staining and performs routine staining using both automated and manual methods.
  5. Maintains accurate records of all procedures performed, ensuring traceability and compliance.
  6. Adheres to strict safety protocols and maintains a clean, organized laboratory environment.
  7. Performs routine maintenance and quality control checks on laboratory equipment and reagents.
  8. Works primarily on routine, transactional assignments guided by established policies, procedures, guidelines, and precedent.
  9. Exercises independent judgment on basic to moderately complex issues related to job responsibilities.
  10. May provide guidance to team members to ensure accurate and timely completion of tasks.
  11. Interacts primarily with internal and administrative personnel; some roles may require transactional interaction with vendors or clinical teams.
  12. Performs related duties as required. All responsibilities listed are considered essential functions under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Duties not listed but deemed related are not considered essential functions.

Job Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Histology, Medical Technology, Basic Science, or a related field, required.
  • Current New York State license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Histological Technician, required.
  • Specialized certifications, as needed.
  • Previous experience in a histology laboratory, preferred.
  • 0–1 years of technical experience required.
