Snowflake information

What are some common challenges faced by Snowflake professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Snowflake professionals often encounter challenges such as optimizing query performance, managing data security and access controls, and integrating Snowflake with multiple data sources. Addressing these challenges requires continuous learning about the platform’s evolving features, proactively monitoring query and storage usage, and collaborating closely with data architects, DevOps, and IT security teams. Staying up to date with best practices and regularly attending Snowflake community webinars or training can also be extremely helpful. Most companies encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration, so being proactive in problem-solving will help you thrive in this role.

What is a Snowflake?

A Snowflake job typically refers to tasks executed within Snowflake, a cloud-based data platform. These jobs can include data loading, transformation, querying, or scheduled tasks using Snowflake's task and stream features. They help automate data workflows, improve performance, and ensure efficient data management within the Snowflake ecosystem.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Snowflake position?

To thrive as a Snowflake professional (such as a Snowflake Data Engineer or Administrator), you need a solid understanding of cloud data warehousing, SQL, and data modeling, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Experience with the Snowflake platform, data integration tools (like Informatica or Talend), and relevant certifications such as SnowPro are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and adaptability help professionals translate business requirements into data solutions and work effectively with cross-functional teams. These competencies are crucial for optimizing data workflows, ensuring system performance, and supporting the data-driven goals of an organization.

In 2021, Diversified announced our expansion into our Central Regional Focus Area, which includes producing areas within Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
POSITION SUMMARY & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Diversified Energy Company (DEC) is a leading natural gas operator with a long-term focus on sustainable, low-decline production assets across the Appalachian Basin and beyond. Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, DEC is transforming how upstream energy companies use data to improve operational performance, increase shareholder value, and responsibly steward energy resources.
Position Summary
The Data Engineer / BI Developer is responsible for designing, building, and optimizing the data pipelines, transformation models, semantic views, and analytical infrastructure that power enterprise reporting and analytics at DEC. This role partners closely with the Senior Manager of Business Analytics, developers, and other cross-functional resources to deliver scalable, governed data solutions across the full platform stack. The Senior Data Engineer translates business and analytical requirements into reliable, high-performance data models and pipelines using Snowflake, dbt, SQL, and the Microsoft Power BI and Fabric ecosystem.
This individual will serve as a hands-on technical contributor and cross-functional collaborator, working directly with the VP of Business Intelligence & Analytics and engaging with business stakeholders, the data engineering team, and IT partners. Success in this role requires strong coding discipline, platform depth in Snowflake, and the ability to deliver quality work in a fast-moving, maturing data environment.
Key Responsibilities
Data Engineering & Pipeline Development
  • Design, build, and maintain ELT/ETL pipelines using dbt Core and Snowflake as the primary transformation and serving layer.
  • Develop well-structured, tested, and documented semantic views following established medallion and semantic layer patterns.
  • Implement change data capture and streaming ingestion patterns where required.
  • Own end-to-end data flow from raw ingestion through consumption-ready analytical models.

Snowflake Platform Engineering
  • Develop and maintain Snowflake Dynamic Tables for automated, low-latency data transformations.
  • Build Snowflake Cortex Analyst integrations to support AI-powered data interaction and natural language query patterns.
  • Design and implement Snowflake Semantic Views as part of the enterprise semantic and metric layer.
  • Leverage Apache Iceberg Tables within Snowflake for open table format and cross-platform interoperability.
  • Manage warehouse sizing, multi-cluster configuration, and auto-suspend policies to govern credit consumption.
  • Perform query profiling and optimization including clustering strategy, search optimization, and result cache utilization.
  • Support credit governance through resource monitor configuration and cost attribution reporting.

BI Development & Semantic Layer
  • Develop Snowflake Artifacts for governed use across the organization.
  • Develop certified datasets, governed report templates, and reusable components for the user experience layer.

Architecture & Governance
  • Contribute to data architecture design including source system modeling and consumption layer structure.
  • Support data governance practices including lineage, catalog metadata, column-level security, and row-level security.
  • Assist with SOX compliance requirements including change control documentation and audit trail for data platform assets.
  • Participate in data quality framework design.
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with business analysts and reporting consumers to translate requirements into well-designed data objects.
  • Provide technical direction and code reviews to the Snowflake development team.
  • Engage with IT infrastructure, security, and enterprise architecture on platform and integration decisions.
  • Contribute to the Power User Group and data stewardship program as a technical subject matter expert.
