Snow Removal Contractor information

What is a snow removal contractor?

Snow removal contractors are professionals or companies hired to clear snow and ice from driveways, sidewalks, parking lots, and other areas. They use specialized equipment such as plows, snow blowers, and salt spreaders to ensure safe and accessible pathways during winter weather. Many businesses and homeowners rely on these contractors to maintain safety and meet local regulations regarding snow and ice removal. Services are often scheduled after snowfalls or on a contract basis throughout the winter season.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a snow removal contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Snow Removal Contractor, you need expertise in equipment operation, knowledge of safe snow and ice removal techniques, and usually a valid driver's license or commercial driving certification. Familiarity with snowplows, de-icing agents, and scheduling or dispatch software is typically required. Reliability, attention to detail, and strong customer service skills help contractors build trust and maintain client relationships. These abilities ensure efficient, timely, and safe service delivery, which is critical for minimizing hazards and meeting client expectations during winter weather events.

What are the main challenges snow removal contractors face during peak winter months, and how can they prepare for them?

During peak winter months, Snow Removal Contractors often face unpredictable weather conditions, long or overnight shifts, and the need to respond quickly to client calls. Equipment maintenance and timely communication with team members are critical, as any breakdowns or delays can lead to safety issues or client dissatisfaction. To prepare, contractors should ensure all equipment is serviced before the season begins, establish clear communication protocols with their teams, and plan efficient routes to maximize coverage and minimize downtime.

Job description

WHY JOIN OUT TEAM?

Our vision is to be the most trusted landscaping contractor in the Okotoks area and we're proud of our reputation as a professional, talented and friendly team. Because we're serious about the bold promises we make to our clients, we are pretty darn picky about who we hire.

WHAT WE HAVE TO OFFER:

  • Ongoing training and mentorship (we want you to level up quickly)
  • Career advancement opportunities (ask to see our career path when we meet)
  • A great reputation (we're a company that you can be proud to represent. Check out our reviews)
  • Incredible coworkers that have each other's back (you can ask our employees yourself)
  • Good equipment (we've heard that you like equipment that works properly)
  • A good safety program (we're COR certified)
  • Potential for Year-round work (you're going to love snow removal)
  • Challenging work (we work on a tight schedule and keep out commitments to clients)

THIS ROLE IS FOR YOU IF YOU HAVE...

  • Serious grounds keeping skills (you worked in this industry, not just mowed your grandma's lawn)
  • Physical strength and stamina (it's hard, outdoor work)
  • Clear and respectful communication skills (everything flows better when people communicate well)
  • Ability to manage your own time efficiently (yeah, you have to adult without being supervised)
  • Problem solving & critical thinking skills (can you handle the unpredictable?)
  • A reputation for being dependable and responsible (our clients trust us; we'd have to trust you with our clients)
  • Ability to learn new technology quickly (we use a lot of apps for stuff like safety and time tracking)

IN THIS ROLE YOU WOULD BE:

  • Hauling grounds keeping equipment to multiple commercial sites in and around Calgary
  • Operating a variety of grounds keeping equipment (lawn mower, trimmer, hedge pruner, sweeper, blower, etc.)
  • Spring and fall cleanup of garden beds
  • Edging, pruning, fertilizing and weed control
  • Participating in morning meetings with the crew to gain full understanding of projects and the daily and weekly goals.
  • Participating in the care, cleaning & organizing of equipment, tools and trucks
  • Performing snow removal tasks such as snow plowing, sweeping, blowing, shoveling, etc. from November - March

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Available for at least 5 months fulltime work (May - September)
  • Consistent, reliable transportation to our location (between Calgary and Okotoks)
  • 1 full season of grounds keeping experience
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labour for long periods of time

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Extended periods of standing, and other physically demanding conditions
  • Hazards associated with conducting work outdoors
  • Lifting, moving, or manipulating heavy objects
  • Operation and use of necessary tools, machinery, or equipment
  • Regular exposure to conditions including cold, heat, humidity, and dust
  • Weekend and overnight work during snow removal season
  • Repetitive work
  • Use of required personal protective equipment
  • Exposure to high noise levels
  • Exposure to hazards associated with the industry/trade

Schedule

  • Monday - Friday 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM from April - October
  • On-call 24/7 for snow removal from November - March
