Job description

Amsted Automotive Group, SMW Manufacturing, Taylor, Michigan, is looking for a Quality Engineer to join our Team. In this role you will be responsible for supporting the daily plant quality operations and monitoring various inspection and testing functions pf the Quality department. Coordinate with other departments, collect data, analyze customer data, and resolve customer and supplier issues.

What You'll Do

  • Adapt and promote Lean Manufacturing principles
  • Active participant in the Elimination of Waste Team meetings
  • Support the Company’s Goals and Objectives
  • Exemplify the AAG Ideal Behaviors
  • Under direction of the Quality Manager / Senior Management respond to and follow up on external customer concerns and Corrective Action Requests (complaints); represent the “Voice of the Customer”
  • Maintain the Quality Management System and ISO/IATF Certifications
  • Operate with proficiency in automotive quality problem solving disciplines (Ishikaw, 3-Legged/ 5-Why, 8D, etc.). Root cause analysis and implementation of permanent corrective action for product and process related concerns
  • Gather and analyze statistical data (SPC) and make recommendations for process adjustments / improvements
  • Conduct all work activities in a manner that is supportive of lean operating principles, team effort and promotes the company’s operational visions, values, and goals
  • Complete work assignments in a timely, accurate, and safe manner in accordance with the standards required through the company and / or applicable Regulations / Legislation
  • Develop and participate in training or other team activities to support ongoing compliance and continuous improvement
  • Administer Gage R & R’s studies
  • Ability to read customer prints and Geometric Tolerancing - Basic or Advanced Knowledge.
  • Manager suppliers and supplier development activities
  • Manage Customer Complaints & Corrective Action
  • Manage Sorting Activities or Delegate and Instruct Sort Activity.
  • Issue Quality Alerts & Product Deviations
  • Customer & Supplier PPAP Submission Package Administrative Duties and Submission
  • Participate in the APQP Process (PFMEA and Control Plan Development) in collaboration with Program Management and Engineering functions.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Quality Manager or designate
  • Responsible for continual improvement activities to enhance the quality system, such as 5S, Kaizen lean methods, etc.
  • Develop training to build quality awareness
  • Experience in Measurement Systems: calipers, micrometers, optical comparator, CMM (Open DMIS) using CAD generated models
  • Oversee gage calibration activities
  • Conduct Annual Layouts on occasion
  • Experience with AIAG Core Tools: SPC, APQP, PFEMA, MSA & PPAP
  • Interface with Engineering and Operations to ensure transfer to Production of new products are in accordance with approved specifications.
  • Support the Quality Technicians to ensure that products and processes comply with the relevant requirements of the quality management system.
  • Conduct audits, including closing out audit findings, creating audits finding reports and determining proper corrective and preventative actions.
  • Create and maintain company quality documentation, such as quality manuals, quality procedures, etc.
  • Ensure timely resolution of supplier failure, corrective actions and preventative actions
  • Manage suppliers’ performance and conduct audits
  • Preparation of QA reports, capability studies, PPAP documentation, etc.
  • Other research or related activities as deemed necessary
  • Comply with all safety requirements and proper use of PPE
  • Shall adhere to all safety, health and environmental procedures, policies and practices, such as utilizing personal protective equipment and proper attire in keeping with safety standards

What Else You'll Need to Know

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Work Experience required
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or business required and preferred; but not required
  • Certification by American Society of Quality preferred; but not required
  • 5 - 10 years of experience as a Quality Engineer, or similar, in an ISO certified environment
  • The ability to travel from plant to plant: on occasion
  • Ability to travel to customer locations when required: on occasion
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment and excellent work history.
  • Attention to detail with emphasis on accuracy and quality
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and competence with GD&T
  • Ability to prioritize work to balance multiple projects and deadlines
  • Excellent verbal, listening and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint as well as current technology software familiarity.
  • Proactive, positive attitude, safety and environmentally focused.
  • Ability to regularly stand or work for long periods of time.
  • Ability to regularly lift/or move up to ten (10) pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds, and occasionally lift to fifty (40-50) pounds.
  • Occasional moderate walking throughout the plant daily.
