Smt Mydata Machine Operator information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SMT Mydata Machine Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SMT Mydata Machine Operator, you need a solid understanding of electronics manufacturing, attention to detail, and experience with surface mount technology (SMT) processes, often supported by a technical diploma or equivalent experience. Proficiency using Mydata (now Mycronic) pick-and-place machines, solder paste printers, and automated optical inspection (AOI) systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help operators excel in troubleshooting and maintaining production flow. These skills ensure precise assembly, high product quality, and efficient operation in fast-paced manufacturing environments.

What are SMT Mydata Machine Operators?

SMT Mydata Machine Operators are skilled technicians responsible for operating and maintaining Surface Mount Technology (SMT) machines, specifically those made by Mydata (now part of Mycronic). They set up, run, and monitor the automated equipment used to place electronic components onto printed circuit boards (PCBs) in electronics manufacturing. Their duties include performing machine setup, loading components, troubleshooting errors, and ensuring quality standards are met. Operators must also perform routine maintenance and keep detailed records of production runs.

What are some common challenges faced by SMT Mydata Machine Operators, and how can they be addressed?

SMT Mydata Machine Operators often encounter challenges such as machine jams, component misfeeds, and maintaining high placement accuracy during production runs. To address these issues, operators should perform regular preventative maintenance, stay up to date with machine calibration, and quickly troubleshoot errors using diagnostic tools. Additionally, collaborating closely with technicians and quality control teams ensures that any recurring issues are resolved efficiently, minimizing downtime and improving overall production quality.

Job description

Build Something That Matters

When a school goes on lockdown, an earthquake is about to hit, or a hospital calls a code — there's a good chance a Valcom system is doing the talking. For nearly 50 years, we've built the paging, intercom, and emergency communication systems that keep people informed and safe in the moments that count. Every one of those systems starts on a circuit board. And every circuit board starts with someone like you.

Why You'll Like It Here
  • Four-day work week. Our core shift is Monday - Thursday, 4 pm to 2:30 am and there is plenty of overtime available on Friday.
  • Your mornings are yours. Second shift means no alarm-clock scramble — run errands, hit appointments, or sleep in before your 4:00 pm start. As a plus, you'll also receive $1.00 per hour shift differential on top of your base wage.
  • No experience? No problem. We'll train you. If you're mechanically inclined, detail-oriented, and dependable, we'll teach you the rest — including surface mount (SMT) and through-hole technology skills that are in demand across the electronics industry.
  • Real room to grow. We need employees willing to cross-train and learn new skills.
  • A team that knows your name. Valcom has been part of the Roanoke Valley for almost five decades. We're big enough to matter and small enough that you're never just a number.
What You'll Do

You'll operate the automated equipment that places electronic components onto printed circuit boards — the heart of every product we make. Day to day, that looks like:

  • Running, setting up, and changing over surface mount technology (SMT) and through-hole machines
  • Calibrating and programming machine settings for different board layouts and components
  • Inspecting boards at every stage to make sure they meet quality standards
  • Keeping machines stocked with materials and performing scheduled maintenance
  • Troubleshooting issues and working with your team to keep quality high and production moving
The Environment

You'll work in a clean, climate-conditioned manufacturing facility with low to moderate noise. You'll be on your feet, moving between workstations, and working with your hands — if you like staying busy and seeing tangible results at the end of your shift, you'll feel right at home.

About Valcom

Valcom is a leader in voice paging, intercom, and emergency notification systems. Virtually all Valcom's products are engineered, manufactured, and supported in our 120,000-square-foot facility in Roanoke, Virginia. Now part of Potter Global Technologies, we offer a unique employee ownership program backed by private equity firm, KKR. As a co-owner, you'll have the opportunity to play a more direct role in our business and benefit financially from our growth — a rare perk you won't find with our competitors. We offer a full benefits package including a 401(k) match, PTO, 10 paid holidays, an emergency grant program and free financial advising.

    What We're Looking For
    • Mechanical aptitude and a knack for troubleshooting
    • Sharp attention to detail — our products protect people, so quality isn't optional
    • Basic computer skills and the ability to read written instructions in English
    • Willingness to cross-train, adapt to changing priorities, and work as part of a team
    • Ability to stand for a 10-hour shift, lift up to 25 lbs, and use hand tools and small components
    • Availability to work overtime which frequently includes Friday and occasional Saturday
    • Experience is a plus, but not required — we hire for attitude and train for skill
