Job description

Job Summary

The Shop Mechanic I supports the maintenance and repair of company vehicles, equipment, and tools used in nursery operations. This role performs basic maintenance services, assists with repairs, and helps ensure that company equipment is safe and operational. The Shop Mechanic I works under the direction of the Shop Mechanic Lead or Fleet Manager and supports daily shop operations.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with routine maintenance on company vehicles and equipment.
  • Check and maintain vehicle fluids including oil, coolant, and hydraulic fluids.
  • Perform oil changes and basic preventative maintenance services.
  • Assist with tire changes and tire repairs.
  • Support maintenance and repair of nursery equipment and small machinery.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness and organization.
  • Assist with maintaining maintenance records for company vehicles and equipment.
  • Follow company safety policies and procedures when performing repairs or maintenance.
  • Properly dispose of shop waste materials in compliance with local, county, and state regulations.
  • Support general care of nursery equipment and facilities when needed.

Additional Responsibilities

  • May assist other nursery departments as needed.
  • May travel to nearby nursery locations to assist with equipment repairs when needed.
  • Duties are subject to change at management’s discretion.

Experience and Other Requirements

Required

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools and shop equipment.
  • Ability to work safely around machinery and vehicles.
  • Ability to maintain organized maintenance records.

Preferred

  • Experience working with mechanical equipment or vehicle maintenance.
  • Experience working with agricultural or nursery equipment.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is performed primarily outdoors and within a mechanical shop environment.

Work conditions include exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven ground surfaces, machinery noise, oils, grease, and shop chemicals.

Physical requirements include:

  • Standing or walking for extended periods of time
  • Climbing ladders and working around equipment
  • Stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling when performing repairs
  • Lifting up to 25 lbs. (75% of the time)
  • Team lifting up to 100 lbs. (25% of the time)
  • Use of hands for grasping tools and equipment
