What is a small shop?

Small shop workers are employees who work in independently owned or locally operated retail stores, often with a small staff and a more personal approach to customer service. They may be responsible for a variety of tasks, including sales, stocking shelves, handling cash registers, and assisting customers. Small shop workers often have more diverse roles compared to employees in larger retail chains, as they may also help with inventory management, store displays, and even opening or closing the shop. Working in a small shop can offer a close-knit work environment and opportunities to build strong relationships with regular customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a small shop owner?

To thrive as a Small Shop Owner, you need strong business management skills, basic financial literacy, and experience in retail operations. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and possibly certifications in retail or small business management is highly beneficial. Excellent customer service, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring smooth shop operations, building customer loyalty, and driving business growth in a competitive environment.

What are some common challenges faced by employees working in a small shop, and how can they be addressed?

Employees in a small shop often juggle multiple responsibilities, such as customer service, inventory management, and merchandising, which can be challenging but also rewarding. Limited staffing means teamwork and adaptability are essential, as you may need to step into different roles throughout the day. Communication is key to managing workloads and ensuring smooth operations. Developing strong organizational skills and a proactive approach can help address these challenges and contribute to a positive work environment.

Job description

Build beautiful work. Use modern technology. Join a team that values craftsmanship.

Roark Studio is looking for an experienced cabinet builder to join our small, highly skilled team in Charlottesville, VA. We design and build premium custom cabinetry and select furniture pieces for clients who appreciate exceptional quality and attention to detail.

Unlike a production shop, every project is unique. You'll work in a collaborative two- to three-person shop where your ideas, craftsmanship, and problem-solving skills make a real impact.

What You'll Do

  • Build high-end custom cabinets from start to finish.
  • Read shop drawings and architectural plans.
  • Operate woodworking machinery and hand tools safely and efficiently.
  • Assemble, fit, and finish cabinetry to exacting standards.
  • Work closely with a small team to solve problems and continually improve our processes.

Who We're Looking For

We're searching for someone who takes pride in their work and enjoys building products that will last for decades.

You should have:

  • Knowledge of woodworking equipment and shop safety.
  • The ability to accurately read plans and shop drawings.
  • Solid computer skills and a willingness to learn new technology.
  • A positive attitude, reliability, and a strong work ethic.

Experience with Mozaik, Chief Architect, or Google Workspace is a plus, but we're happy to train the right person.

Why Work at Roark Studio?

We're building more than cabinets—we're building a better way to build them.

Roark Studio embraces technology to make our shop more efficient without compromising the craftsmanship that has earned our reputation. We continually invest in better processes, better tools, and better ideas so our team can focus on producing outstanding work.

Because we're a small shop, your contributions matter. You'll have the opportunity to influence how we work, learn new skills, and grow with the company.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Starting pay: $22+/hour, based on experience.
  • 100% employer-paid medical insurance for employee
  • 100% employer-paid dental insurance for employee & family
  • 401(k) with up to 4% company match.
  • Free ACAC Fitness & Wellness membership.
  • Paid time off and holidays.

If you're passionate about woodworking, enjoy solving problems, and want to build exceptional custom cabinetry with a team that values quality over quantity, we'd love to hear from you.
