Companies, including mattress brands and sleep research organizations, hire sleep testers to help improve product design. The role may involve documenting sleep experiences, assessing different sleep conditions, and sometimes participating in scientific sleep studies. It can be a freelance, part-time, or full-time job, depending on the employer.

What does a sleep tester do?

As a Sleep Tester, your daily routine may involve reporting to a sleep lab, hotel, or product testing facility, where you'll be assigned specific products, mattresses, or environments to evaluate overnight or during scheduled naps. You will follow detailed protocols, complete surveys about your experience, and sometimes wear monitoring devices to track sleep patterns. Collaboration with researchers or product development teams is common, as your feedback and data are essential for their studies. While work hours can vary, especially if overnight testing is required, Sleep Testers generally work on a project or contract basis, allowing for flexibility in scheduling.
