Job description

Overview

Full time: 5 days a week/ 8 hour shifts: 7a-3:30p

Description
  • Operates polysomnographic recording equipment used to record and evaluate sleep/wake disorders.

  • Performs monitoring that includes transcutaneous and End-Tidal CO measurements.

  • Scores polysomnographic recordings in preparation for physician interpretation.

  • Performs additional related duties as required.

Equipment and Supplies

  • Operates and calibrates polysomnographic equipment to ensure accurate recordings.

Patient Care and Advocacy

  • Reviews patient medical charts and confirms physician orders and required protocols.

  • Interviews patients to assess:

    • Current sleep patterns

    • Medication allergies and conditions

    • Current medications

    • Alcohol or caffeine intake on the day of the test

  • Performs research studies according to protocol, which may include:

    • Full 10/20 EEG recordings

    • Assisting with development or documentation of research protocols

  • Completes necessary patient processing and documentation procedures.

  • Applies and removes electrodes and monitoring equipment used in polysomnography, including:

    • EKG

    • EMG

    • EOG

    • Airflow monitors

    • Oximetry sensors

  • Fits and troubleshoots PAP masks to improve patient comfort and therapy effectiveness.

  • Applies and titrates respiratory therapies according to physician orders and protocols, including:

    • CPAP

    • BiPAP

    • Adaptive Servo Ventilation (ASV)

    • AVAPS / iVAPS / AVAPS AE titrations

    • Supplemental oxygen when required

  • Utilizes advanced titration techniques and interprets patient tidal volume and pressure support needs, particularly in patients with complex respiratory conditions such as:

    • Chronic respiratory insufficiency

    • Chronic respiratory failure

    • Chronic hypoventilation

    • Neuromuscular diseases

    • COPD

  • Educates patients on the proper use of CPAP/BiPAP equipment.

  • Monitors sleep recordings, including patient positioning and sleep pathology recognition.

  • Identifies and records clinical and physiological sleep events.

  • Accurately scores polysomnographic studies for physician review.

Professional Development

  • Works with management to develop a professional development plan.

  • Attends educational in-services and training sessions as appropriate.

Safety, Security, and Health

  • Cleans and disinfects equipment used directly on patients.

  • Monitors patients for adverse events and responds according to established protocols.

Staff Resource

  • Assists with orientation and training of new staff within the sleep laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (degree preferred).

  • One year of related experience.

  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) certification required.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs.; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs., 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs., 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs. max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock , Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
