What is a SkyWest Pilot job?

A SkyWest pilot operates regional flights for major airline partners, including Delta, United, American, and Alaska Airlines. They fly passengers on short- and medium-haul routes while ensuring safety, efficiency, and adherence to FAA regulations. SkyWest pilots benefit from a defined career path, competitive pay, and the ability to upgrade to captain or transition to mainline carriers. With a strong training program and a commitment to excellence, SkyWest offers a great starting point for many aspiring airline pilots.

Is there still a pilot shortage in 2026?

The airline industry, including Skywest pilots, has experienced a pilot shortage due to increased travel demand and retirements. This shortage is expected to continue into 2026, leading to higher hiring needs and competitive compensation for qualified pilots with required certifications and flight hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Skywest Pilot position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Skywest Pilot, you need a commercial pilot certificate with multi-engine and instrument ratings, strong aeronautical knowledge, and significant flight hours. Mastery of flight management systems (FMS), navigation equipment, and regulatory compliance with FAA standards are essential technical requirements. Exceptional communication, situational awareness, and problem-solving abilities help pilots excel in dynamic and high-pressure situations. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure passenger safety, regulatory adherence, and efficient flight operations.

What does a typical work schedule look like for a Skywest Pilot?

Skywest Pilots generally work a variable schedule that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on flight routes and seniority. Pilots usually operate on a bid system, where schedules and preferred routes are selected based on seniority, and typical flying duty periods can range from a few hours to multiple-day trips. While time away from home is common, pilots receive scheduled rest periods and time off between trips as mandated by FAA regulations. The dynamic schedule and opportunity to work with various flight crews offer both variety and the chance to gain broader experience in the regional airline industry.

How hard is it to get hired at SkyWest?

Getting hired as a SkyWest pilot is competitive and requires meeting specific qualifications, including a commercial pilot certificate, flight hours, and experience. The hiring process involves multiple interviews, simulator assessments, and background checks, making it a rigorous process for qualified applicants.

What pilots make $500,000 a year?

Skywest pilots, like many regional airline pilots, typically do not earn $500,000 annually. Top pay for experienced pilots at major airlines or those with seniority, additional flight hours, and overtime can reach high six-figure salaries, but such earnings are uncommon for regional airline pilots. Most pilots' salaries depend on experience, aircraft type, and union agreements.

How much do pilots at SkyWest make?

SkyWest pilots' salaries vary based on experience, seniority, and flight hours, but typically range from around $50,000 to over $200,000 annually. Entry-level pilots earn lower salaries, while experienced captains with additional certifications can earn higher wages. Compensation often includes benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans.
