How much do skid design engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for skid design engineer in the United States is $88,150.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $68,000.00 and $98,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are Skid Design Engineers?

Skid Design Engineers are professionals who specialize in designing modular, transportable systems—called skids—that house process equipment, piping, instrumentation, and controls for industries like oil and gas, chemical, or water treatment. These engineers focus on creating compact, pre-assembled units that can be easily installed and integrated into larger facilities. Their responsibilities include 3D modeling, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver efficient and safe skid-mounted solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Skid Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Skid Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, experience with process and piping design, and typically a bachelor's degree in engineering. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), knowledge of relevant industry codes (like ASME or API), and familiarity with project management tools are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and ensure designs meet client specifications. These skills are crucial for delivering safe, efficient, and compliant skid systems in industrial settings.

What is the difference between Skid Design Engineer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectSkid Design EngineerStructural Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Civil, or related engineering; certifications varyBachelor's in Civil or Structural Engineering; PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, industrial facilities, equipment designBuildings, bridges, infrastructure projects
Industry UsageOil & gas, manufacturing, industrial sectorsConstruction, infrastructure, architecture

Skid Design Engineers focus on designing modular skid systems for industrial applications, emphasizing mechanical and process considerations. Structural Engineers primarily design and analyze load-bearing structures like buildings and bridges. While both roles require engineering credentials, Skid Design Engineers typically work in manufacturing environments, whereas Structural Engineers operate in construction and infrastructure sectors. The roles are distinct but may overlap in project planning and safety standards.

How does a Skid Design Engineer typically collaborate with other engineering disciplines during a project?

As a Skid Design Engineer, you will work closely with process, mechanical, instrumentation, and electrical engineers throughout the project lifecycle. Collaboration often involves coordinating design requirements, reviewing P&IDs, ensuring all system components are integrated efficiently, and participating in design reviews to address potential conflicts early. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, especially when resolving interface issues and meeting project deadlines. This cross-disciplinary interaction is crucial for delivering safe, functional, and cost-effective skid-mounted systems.
