Job description

Location: Salem Hospital, 665 Winter Street SE, Salem, Oregon 97301
Department: Pharmacy
Position Type: Full Time, 40 hours/week, Non-Exempt
Schedule: Seven nights on/seven nights off, 8:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m.
Your role with us
The pharmacy technician at Salem Health plays a key role in supporting safe medication management, accurate compounding and timely distribution across central, decentral and IV services. This position is a great fit for a detail-oriented individual with strong communication and teamwork skills who can balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced hospital environment. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem-solver with experience in pharmacy operations, medication reconciliation and automated dispensing systems.
What you'll do
  • Prepare and dispense medications accurately by filling prescriptions, compounding oral liquids and IV admixtures using aseptic technique and generating labels in Epic.
  • Conduct medication reconciliation by interviewing newly admitted patients, entering home medication histories into Epic and contacting primary care providers or community pharmacies to verify information.
  • Manage automated dispensing systems including stocking Omnicell cabinets with controlled and non-controlled medications, resolving discrepancies, clearing return bins and operating RxOBOT for first doses and 24-hour fills.
  • Maintain inventory levels by checking stock, anticipating needs, placing orders, verifying receipts, removing outdated medications and completing bi-monthly outdate checks.
  • Deliver medications and IVs throughout the hospital, ensure timely departures and returns, label nurse servers with patient identification and support Joint Commission compliance.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by answering phones within three rings, greeting providers and patients, relaying messages accurately and collaborating with pharmacy, nursing and physician teams.
  • Support quality and safety by participating in QA activities, cleaning laminar airflow hoods and work areas, following infection-control protocols and applying USP 795, 797 and 800 standards for sterile and non-sterile compounding.
  • Organize and prioritize daily workload, solve routine problems independently, assist with training new staff and stay current with procedural changes.
  • Maintain accurate records by entering prescription data, filing physician orders and preparing reports to support billing and regulatory requirements.

Required qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • State of Oregon pharmacy technician licensure.
  • National pharmacy technician certification required through the NHA (National Health Career Association) or PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) within one year from date of hire.
