What does a sitter do?

A sitter is someone hired to supervise and care for children, pets, or sometimes elderly adults while their primary caregivers are away. Their responsibilities can include ensuring safety, preparing meals, engaging in play or activities, helping with homework, and following routines set by the family. Sitters may work on a regular schedule or on an as-needed basis, depending on the family's requirements. They are expected to be trustworthy, responsible, and attentive to the needs of those they are caring for.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sitter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sitter, you need a solid understanding of child (or elder) care basics, safety protocols, and often CPR/First Aid certification. Familiarity with communication apps for updates and basic household management tools is common. Patience, reliability, and strong interpersonal skills help build trust and create a positive environment. These skills ensure the well-being and safety of those in your care, as well as peace of mind for families.

What are some typical responsibilities I can expect when working as a sitter, and how do I manage communication with parents or guardians?

As a sitter, your primary responsibilities often include supervising children, ensuring their safety, preparing light meals or snacks, engaging them in age-appropriate activities, and handling basic bedtime or naptime routines. Effective communication with parents or guardians is crucial; it's common practice to discuss any special instructions, allergies, or routines before your shift starts, and to provide updates if any issues arise. Many sitters also give a brief summary at the end of their service about the child's behavior and activities to keep parents informed and build trust.
