Principal Engineer, Field Service - Ellendale, North Dakota
The On-Site Service Engineer I8 is the senior technical authority for assigned AI data center environments, responsible for leading the resolution of the most complex and high-impact technical challenges. This role exercises expert-level judgment, applying deep system knowledge and conceptual problem-solving to stabilize environments, prevent recurring issues, and optimize operational performance. The OSE I8 defines technical standards, influences site-level strategy, and partners closely with engineering and service leadership to drive continuous improvement. Acting as a mentor and technical leader, the role develops engineering talent, advances best practices, and ensures the environment operates at the highest levels of reliability, quality, and efficiency.
This common OSE contract requires the OSE to report to customer site Monday through Friday 08:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Responsibilities
What you will achieve:
The OSE role is vital for delivering Dell's commitment to excellence in field services, especially in high-impact enterprise environments.
  • Provide advanced technical leadership by diagnosing complex multi-system issues, guiding platform, hardware, and firmware changes, and proactively mitigating availability risks
  • Serve as the senior technical authority on-site, leading critical event response and acting as the primary technical escalation point and FSM delegate as needed
  • Establish and enhance site operating models, standards, best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives through data-driven analysis and trend identification
  • Partner with engineering, product, and service leadership to drive complex resolutions, influence technical direction, and improve product and service design
  • Mentor and develop senior engineers and high-potential talent through coaching, technical training, knowledge sharing, and reinforcement of quality standards and expectations

Essential Requirements:
  • Expert-level knowledge of AI data center platforms, system interdependencies, reliability engineering, and advanced troubleshooting for complex, high-impact technical issues.
  • Ability to establish and enforce technical standards, analyze operational trends, anticipate failures, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong technical leadership skills, including influencing cross-functional stakeholders, guiding technical decisions, and leading through ambiguity.
  • Advanced communication, mentoring, and coaching capabilities, with a demonstrated ability to develop senior engineers and share complex technical knowledge effectively.
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field, 9-10 years of technical support/data center experience, Dell Proven Professional certification, and flexibility for on-call support, travel, and physical job requirements.

Compensation
Dell is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this position is $96,390 - $124,700.
