What is a single engine air tanker?

A Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) pilot operates a small, fixed-wing aircraft designed for aerial firefighting. The job involves quickly deploying fire retardant or water to wildfire areas, often in challenging weather and terrain conditions. SEAT pilots work closely with ground crews and other aircraft to control and contain wildfires. They must have extensive flying experience, specialized training, and a strong understanding of fire behavior. This role requires precision, quick decision-making, and the ability to operate in high-stress environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a single engine air tanker pilot?

To excel as a Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) pilot, you need a commercial pilot's license with significant fixed-wing flight hours, specialized wildfire suppression training, and strong situational awareness. Proficiency in operating GPS navigation systems, aerial firefighting equipment, and completion of U.S. Forest Service or equivalent agency SEAT training are typically required. Excellent decision-making, communication, and stress management skills help you coordinate with ground crews and adapt to rapidly changing environments. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensuring safe, effective, and responsive aerial firefighting operations.

What are the typical work schedules and environments for single engine air tanker pilots?

Single Engine Air Tanker pilots often work seasonal schedules, primarily during wildfire seasons, with on-call shifts that require rapid response to emergent fire activity. Pilots are typically stationed at air bases or remote locations and collaborate closely with ground firefighting teams, dispatchers, and air support coordinators. The role involves flying in challenging conditions, including variable weather and low visibility, and may require extended days or temporary relocation during periods of high fire activity. This dynamic work environment demands flexibility and a strong commitment to safety and teamwork.
