Single Cell Spatial Transcriptomics information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Single Cell Spatial Transcriptomics Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Single Cell Spatial Transcriptomics Scientist, you need a strong background in molecular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics, typically supported by an advanced degree (PhD or MSc) in a relevant field. Familiarity with high-throughput sequencing platforms, spatial transcriptomics technologies (like 10x Genomics Visium or NanoString GeoMx), and data analysis tools such as R or Python is essential. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting complex data and collaborating in multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are vital for generating reliable insights into cellular function and spatial organization, which drive innovative research and discovery.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in Single Cell Spatial Transcriptomics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Single Cell Spatial Transcriptomics often encounter challenges related to handling large, complex data sets and integrating spatial information with single-cell transcriptomic profiles. These tasks demand strong computational skills and close collaboration with bioinformaticians and other researchers. Effective communication within interdisciplinary teams is essential to ensure experimental design aligns with downstream analysis needs. Staying updated with rapidly evolving technologies and best practices also helps professionals overcome technical hurdles and produce reliable, high-impact results.

What is single cell spatial transcriptomics?

Single cell spatial transcriptomics is a cutting-edge technique that allows researchers to analyze gene expression in individual cells while preserving their spatial location within a tissue. This method combines the high-resolution insights of single-cell RNA sequencing with spatial information, enabling scientists to understand how cells interact and organize within their native environments. It is widely used in biomedical research to study tissue architecture, disease mechanisms, and cellular heterogeneity.

Collects, enters and summarizes data. Assists in the maintenance of lab equipment and supplies. Performs basic statistical data analysis; prepares tables/charts/graphs and assists in organizing data. Presents at research laboratory meetings and contributes to writing of manuscripts. Works under supervision and may perform some assignments independently as discussed and approved by Principal Investigator.
Additional Information
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Technologist to join our translational neuro-oncology research team. Our lab focuses on glioblastoma and peripheral nerve sheath tumors, with a strong emphasis on tumor microenvironment biology, spatial and single-cell transcriptomics, hypoxia signaling, and molecular biomarker discovery.
The successful candidate will support ongoing projects by performing established and emerging laboratory techniques, including but not limited to:
Molecular biology assays (PCR, Western blotting, RNA/DNA extraction, qPCR)
Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining on FFPE and frozen tissues
Human and murine cell culture (including primary tumor-derived lines)
Fluorescence and brightfield microscopy, image acquisition, and analysis
Mouse handling and tissue processing (training provided if needed)
Sample preparation for spatial transcriptomics, single-cell analysis, and next-generation sequencing
Data entry and assistance with manuscript and figure preparation
Organization of lab inventory, reagents, and general lab maintenance
The Research Technologist will present data in lab meetings, assist with experimental planning, and collaborate closely with senior lab members and trainees. The candidate will be expected to work independently on routine procedures and receive mentorship for more complex tasks. Opportunities for authorship on publications are available based on contributions.
Qualifications
Requires bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, other relevant science, or an associates degree with 6 years of relevant laboratory experience. Must exhibit a solid understanding of lab techniques, equipment, and safety. Must have the ability to organize and carry out laboratory techniques independently and in a team setting. Experience with basic data analysis is required. This position requires demonstrated writing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field is required (Master's degree or relevant research experience preferred)
Minimum of 2 year of hands-on wet lab experience (academic or industry); associate degree with extensive relevant lab experience will also be considered
Proficiency in standard molecular biology techniques and mammalian cell culture
Proficiency in Western blotting, RNA/DNA extraction, qPCR, and basic data analysis (GraphPad, ImageJ, Excel/R)
Familiarity with gene silencing/knockout methods (CRISPR system, shRNA, siRNA)
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Strong communication and documentation skills
Experience with tissue sectioning, digital pathology, or prior exposure to spatial transcriptomics or single-cell workflows is an asset but not required. Training will be provided.
