The Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 to join their team.
About this Opportunity
The Research Scientist/Engineer 3 (RS/E 3) in the Zhu Laboratory leverages state-of-the-art microphysiological systems, imaging technologies, and single cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics to study host immune responses against chronic viral infection in human skin. The RS/E 3 performs various in situ assays and directs students and other trainees to ensure successful completion of the research project. Additionally, the RS/E 3 performs data analysis, generates summary reports, and contributes to manuscript preparation and grant application.
This is a full-time day shift position located at the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center (1100 Eastlake Building). The specific work schedule will be discussed with the hiring manager.
Key Responsibilities
Research Execution, Experimental Design, and Data Analysis
- Perform high level research and engineering work, analyze data, compile results and draft reports for incoming research awards and/or contracts.
- Perform wet experiments and digital image data analysis of patient tissue specimens.
- Generate, process and analyze high-parameter multiplex immunofluorescence imaging data.
- Process biopsy tissues, perform library constructions and quality control and generate final products for single-cell RNA sequencing.
- Perform work accurately, precisely and meet completion deadlines.
- Analyze experimental data and recommend modifications and follow-up experiments.
- Review the scientific processes, conduct statistical analysis; present data using graphs and figures.
- Develop and optimize research protocols and methodologies.
- Maintain accurate, secure, and HIPAA-compliant records.
Research Project Leadership, Strategic Planning, and Scholarly Contributions
- Manage and lead research projects of small to moderate size and scope.
- Organize, prioritize, and coordinate project activities to meet timelines and milestones.
- Identify long and short-term goals; initiate research program/projects.
- Assess feasibility of study goals and provide technical expertise during project development.
- Collaborate with research teams to develop analytical pipelines for complex immune and spatial biology datasets.
- Contribute data analyses and technical content for grant applications, scientific manuscripts, presentations, and reports.
- Conduct literature reviews to support project planning and development.
- Provide technical guidance and feedback to project collaborators and team members.
Laboratory Operations, Collaboration, and Administrative Support
- Participate in laboratory maintenance, equipment management, and inventory control.
- Maintain documentation and document-control systems.
- Accommodate schedule changes and support team priorities.
- Assist with continuity of research operations by supporting colleagues' experiments as needed.
- Participate in team meetings and collaborative activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support laboratory objectives.
Required Qualifications

- Possesses the knowledge to build microphysiological devices, such as "skin-on-chip" platform for virological and immunological evaluation.
- The ability to generate, process and analyze high-parameter, high content multiplex imaging data.
- Strong written and communication skills.
- Ability to solve problems and troubleshoot.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working experience in immune responses to herpes simplex virus infection is highly desired.
- Highly skilled in laboratory benchwork, such as building skin organoid and microphysiological devices.
- Hands on experience in microfluidics.
