Our purpose at Ampol is to power better journeys today and tomorrow. Our Trading and Shipping team is key to achieving this, not only supplying our customer's needs today, but evolving as the energy transition takes place to supply our customers well into the future.

We take pride in our people and value innovation, sustainability, and customer satisfaction. If you're a professional committed to excellence, Ampol is looking for you.

About the role
The Risk Controller plays a critical role in Ampol's Trading & Shipping Middle Office, providing independent assessment, monitoring, and reporting of market risk and P&L associated with our global commodity trading activities, with a focus on the US business.

This role ensures the integrity and transparency of trading results by validating positions, valuations, and risk metrics across physical and paper transactions in oil and refined products. The Risk Controller acts as a key control point between Trading, Finance, and Operations - ensuring adherence to trading mandates, regulatory requirements, and internal governance standards - while delivering timely, accurate insights to support commercial decision-making.

As part of a global Middle Office function spanning Singapore, the US, and other potential trading hubs, this role also contributes to continuous process and system improvements, supports CTRM optimisation, and upholds Ampol's standards of operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Exposure, P&L, and Valuation Control

  • Independently validate daily trading positions, exposures, and mark-to-market valuations for physical and paper trades.
  • Produce and analyse daily P&L reports, ensuring clear attribution to trading strategies, deal activity, and market movements.
  • Maintain pricing curves and market data integrity to support accurate valuations and risk reporting.

Market Risk Monitoring & Compliance

  • Monitor market risk metrics (e.g. VaR, stress tests, limit utilisation) and escalate breaches or emerging risks.
  • Ensure compliance with trading mandates, risk policies, and regulatory obligations.
  • Provide transparent reporting to management on exposure, risk drivers, and P&L trends.

Governance & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a control point for trade entry validation, strategy allocation, and contract/market data governance in CTRM systems.
  • Partner closely with Trading, Operations, Chartering, and Finance teams to ensure alignment and information accuracy.
  • Support audit and assurance processes, maintaining documentation and evidence to demonstrate control effectiveness.

Process Improvement & System Enhancement

  • Identify and deliver process improvements to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness of reporting.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for CTRM-related enhancements, testing, and automation initiatives.
  • Support the standardisation of Middle Office practices across geographies and trading desks.

Business Insight & Decision Support

  • Provide timely analysis of trading performance, highlighting value drivers, market impacts, and variance explanations.
  • Support scenario analysis, ad hoc risk assessments, and other management decision-making tools.

Skills & Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Business, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Postgraduate qualifications (e.g. CFA, FRM, MBA) desirable but not essential
  • 4-6 years' experience in a Middle Office, Risk Control, or Product Control role within a physical oil trading environment (light ends or middle distillates experience in cargo and pipeline trading preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience with mark-to-market (MtM) valuation, exposure reporting, and P&L attribution in both physical and derivative markets.
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply trading mandates, risk policies, and governance frameworks.
  • Prior experience working with CTRM systems (e.g. Allegro, Endur, Eka, Aspect) preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas, pivot tables, and data modelling.
  • VBA programming skills desirable; experience with Python, SQL, PowerBI or other analytics tools is an advantage.
  • Strong numerical and analytical capability, with the ability to interpret large data sets and extract meaningful insights.
  • High attention to detail with a strong commitment to accuracy and timeliness.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and challenge stakeholders constructively.
  • Independent, proactive, and able to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced trading environment.
  • Process-oriented with a continuous improvement mindset and the ability to identify and implement efficiencies.
  • Strong sense of accountability and ownership of deliverables.
