What does a simulation software engineer intern do?

A Simulation Software Engineer Intern assists in developing and testing software models that simulate real-world processes or systems. They typically work with experienced engineers to write code, debug simulations, and analyze results to ensure accuracy and efficiency. Interns may use tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, or Python, and contribute to projects in fields like automotive, aerospace, or robotics. The role helps interns gain hands-on experience in software engineering and simulation technologies, preparing them for future careers in the industry.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a simulation software engineer internship?

As a Simulation Software Engineer Intern, you will typically contribute to developing, testing, and refining simulation models used for validating real-world systems or products. Your daily tasks may include coding simulation algorithms, analyzing performance data, debugging issues, and collaborating with engineers from other disciplines such as hardware, robotics, or product design. Interns often work closely with mentors, attend team meetings, and may have opportunities to present findings or improvements. This role provides hands-on experience with industry-standard simulation tools and fosters valuable teamwork and technical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a simulation software engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Simulation Software Engineer Intern, you need a strong foundation in programming languages (such as C++, Python, or MATLAB), mathematical modeling, and computer science principles, typically supported by ongoing or completed coursework in engineering or related fields. Familiarity with simulation tools (like Simulink or Modelica), version control systems (such as Git), and possibly exposure to CAD or physics engines is often required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for accurately developing, testing, and refining simulation models within collaborative engineering environments.

What is the difference between Simulation Software Engineer Internship vs Simulation Software Engineer?

AspectSimulation Software Engineer InternshipSimulation Software Engineer
Required CredentialsCurrently pursuing or recently completed a relevant degree (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering)Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field, with some roles preferring experience or certifications
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, often in corporate R&D or product teams, with mentorshipFull-time professional role in engineering teams, often in R&D or product development
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by tech companies, automotive, aerospace, and simulation firms for training and developmentEmployed in similar industries, focusing on developing and maintaining simulation software products

The main difference is that a Simulation Software Engineer Internship is a temporary, learning-focused position for students or recent graduates, while a Simulation Software Engineer is a full-time professional role requiring more experience and responsibility in developing simulation software.

Job description

Software Engineering Intern

Location: Lafayette, LA (Preferred)

Type: Internship (Part-Time or Full-Time Available)

About DMR Technologies

DMR Technologies is a Louisiana-based drone manufacturer developing industryโ€‘leading solutions for agriculture, public safety, critical infrastructure, and defense. As a fastโ€‘growing technology company, we build much more than dronesโ€”we create the software, automation, and internal systems that power every part of our business.

We're looking for a Software Engineering Intern who enjoys building things, learning quickly, and leveraging modern AI development tools to solve realโ€‘world business problems.

What Youโ€™ll Do

As a Software Engineering Intern, youโ€™ll work directly with company leadership to design and develop internal software that improves efficiency across the organization. Projects move quickly, and your work will be used by real employees and customers.

  • Building features for DMRโ€™s custom internal ERP platform
  • Developing web applications using JavaScript and React
  • Creating internal business tools and workflow automation
  • Assisting with website development and content updates
  • Developing customerโ€‘facing and internal web applications
  • Building and configuring AIโ€‘powered agents and chatbots using platforms such as Openโ€ฏClaw
  • Integrating APIs and thirdโ€‘party software
  • Assisting with light UI/UX improvements and basic graphic design
  • Troubleshooting, testing, and improving existing software solutions

No two weeks are exactly alike, and interns are encouraged to contribute ideas and own projects from concept through deployment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
  • Experience with JavaScript
  • Familiarity with React
  • Basic understanding of HTML and CSS
  • Comfortable using Git or other version control systems
  • Strong problemโ€‘solving skills
  • Selfโ€‘motivated and eager to learn new technologies
Bonus Experience

Experience with any of the following is a plus:

  • TypeScript
  • Node.js
  • REST APIs
  • SQL databases
  • Python
  • Mobile app development
  • UI/UX design
  • WordPress or website management
  • AIโ€‘assisted development tools such as Claude, Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, or similar
  • Prompt engineering and AI workflow automation
What Weโ€™re Looking For

We care less about checking every technical box and more about finding someone who loves building software.

  • Enjoys figuring things out independently
  • Learns new technologies quickly
  • Isnโ€™t afraid to experiment
  • Can turn ideas into working software
  • Uses AI tools effectively while still understanding the code theyโ€™re writing
  • Communicates well with both technical and nonโ€‘technical teammates
Why DMR?

As an intern, you wonโ€™t spend your summer fixing minor bugs or working on isolated assignments. Youโ€™ll build software that is actively used throughout the company and have direct exposure to executive leadership, product development, manufacturing, sales, and operations.

Youโ€™ll gain handsโ€‘on experience with:

  • Modern JavaScript development
  • React applications
  • AIโ€‘assisted software development
  • Business software architecture
  • Rapid product development
  • Startup technology culture
  • Realโ€‘world problem solving

If youโ€™re excited about building software, experimenting with AI, and seeing your work make an immediate impact, weโ€™d love to meet you.
