What is a Simulation PhD?

A Simulation PhD is a doctoral degree focused on the development, application, and analysis of simulation techniques across various fields such as engineering, physics, computer science, or healthcare. Students in this program conduct advanced research to create or improve models that simulate real-world processes or systems. The degree typically involves coursework, comprehensive exams, and an original dissertation contributing new knowledge to the field of simulation. Graduates often pursue careers in academia, research, industry, or government, where they apply simulation to solve complex problems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Simulation PhD?

To thrive as a Simulation PhD, you need advanced expertise in simulation modeling, mathematics, and data analysis, usually supported by a doctoral degree in a relevant field such as engineering or computer science. Proficiency with technical tools like MATLAB, Simulink, Python, or specialized simulation software, along with experience in programming and statistical analysis, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and presenting complex results. These abilities are important to drive innovation, ensure accurate research outcomes, and translate simulation results into practical solutions.

What are the typical research collaboration opportunities available to a Simulation PhD within academia or industry?

Simulation PhD holders often work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, computer scientists, and domain experts, to develop and validate complex models. In academia, collaboration may involve joint research projects, co-authored publications, or participation in research consortia. In industry, Simulation PhDs might partner with product development teams, data analysts, or IT professionals to solve real-world problems and optimize processes. These collaborations not only enhance research impact but also provide valuable networking and career advancement opportunities.

Job description

The Senior Vehicle CAE NVH Engineer will be working with CAE tools to lead and guide the design. The Senior Vehicle CAE NVH Engineer will be responsible for assessing NVH performance of BIW/Trimmed Body and full vehicle using ANSA / Optistruct / Hypermesh or similar tools. This candidate will be using pre-processing tools like ANSA/HYPERMESH to create and debug the full vehicle NVH models. The Senior Vehicle CAE NVH Engineer will suggest recommendations for improving the design. This senior engineer can understand the problem by digging into and analyzing the results and is able to find an optimized solution by performing several simulation iterations. The Senior CAE NVH Engineer is involved in component and vehicle testing too and will correlate the CAE results with the test data. The Senior NVH Engineer is responsible for applying advanced methods like DOE/DFSS to optimize the design. This senior engineer will create reports to present the results of the simulations and the achieved improvements. The senior engineer will communicate with the design team, manufacturing team, and suppliers to achieve the desired vehicle performance.
What you bring to the Team
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited or equivalent program.
  • Master's degree or PHD is preferred.
  • 8 + years of automotive structures CAE experience, with 6+ years of direct experience in performing full vehicle NVH CAE analysis
  • Extensive NVH problem solving experience in full vehicle, trimmed body using source-path-receiver thinking for structure borne (Vibration, noise) + airborne noise
  • Experience with using Opti struct/NASTRAN, ANSA and HYPERWORKS
  • Experience with setting modal targets (modal map), isolation strategy, VTF, NTF analysis & target setting
  • Experience with NVH vehicle benchmarking and target cascading full vehicle to subsystems & component level
  • Experience with correlation of CAE and Test results
  • Hands on experience with optimization tools and techniques using Optistruct
  • Knowledge of applying engineering fundaments in product development
  • Ability to work independently from start to end
  • Strong oral and verbal cross functional communication skills
  • Act as a team player and problem solver
