What are silt fences and what are they used for?

Silt fences are temporary sediment control devices typically made of a synthetic filter fabric stretched between a series of wooden or metal stakes. They are commonly used on construction sites to prevent soil erosion and control sediment runoff by filtering water and trapping soil particles. Silt fences are installed along the perimeter of disturbed areas to protect nearby water bodies, storm drains, and natural habitats from sediment contamination. Proper installation and maintenance are crucial for their effectiveness in minimizing environmental impact during construction activities.

How to join a silt fence?

Joining a silt fence involves overlapping the fabric ends by at least 6 inches and securing them with staples or wire ties to ensure a continuous barrier. Proper installation also requires anchoring the fence into the ground with stakes or posts and ensuring it is taut to effectively control sediment runoff.
