What does a silicon photonics process development engineer do?

A Silicon Photonics Process Development Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes manufacturing processes for silicon photonic devices, which integrate optical and electronic components on a silicon chip. They work closely with multidisciplinary teams to translate photonic device designs into scalable, high-yield fabrication processes using semiconductor manufacturing techniques. Their work involves process characterization, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement to meet performance, reliability, and cost targets for applications such as data communications, sensing, and computing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a silicon photonics process development engineer?

To thrive as a Silicon Photonics Process Development Engineer, you need a strong background in semiconductor device physics, cleanroom fabrication techniques, and materials science, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field. Familiarity with process simulation software, photolithography systems, and characterization tools like SEM and ellipsometry is essential, and experience with industry standards such as ISO or Six Sigma can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and address complex technical challenges. These abilities ensure robust process development, high device performance, and successful integration of photonic technologies into scalable manufacturing.

What are common challenges faced by silicon photonics process development engineers when transferring prototypes to high-volume manufacturing?

A key challenge for Silicon Photonics Process Development Engineers is ensuring that prototype designs can be reliably and efficiently scaled up for mass production without sacrificing performance or yield. This often involves troubleshooting variations in fabrication processes, optimizing process parameters, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as design, quality assurance, and manufacturing engineers. Maintaining tight control over process tolerances and integrating new technologies into existing manufacturing lines also requires strong problem-solving skills and adaptability. Engineers in this role benefit from hands-on experience and proactive communication to address issues quickly and ensure smooth transitions from development to production.

What is the difference between Silicon Photonics Process Development Engineer vs Silicon Photonics Test Engineer?

AspectSilicon Photonics Process Development EngineerSilicon Photonics Test Engineer

Job description

Job Details:Job Description:

As a Silicon Photonics (SiP) Process or Product Integration Engineer, you will be part of Intel's SiP Process Development and Manufacturing (SPDM) team that is leading Intel's market transition and driving innovation for the next generation of optical interconnect products. You will play a critical role in the next generation of silicon photonics product roadmaps, fabrication process development, yield improvement roadmaps, and reliability qualifications.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • A Process Integrator collaborates with Yield Analysis, Device and Defect Engineers, IPS (SiP Product Division) designers, and Process Engineers to ensure new processes and products are capable of meeting yield and reliability requirements at the time of PRQ.

  • Defines and establishes process flow, procedures, and required equipment to develop new devices or products. Plans and conducts experiments to fully characterize the process throughout the development cycle.

  • Trains production/receiving engineers for transfer to high volume manufacturing.

  • A Product Integration Engineer (PIE) will act as a key technical leader and the primary fab contact for integrating one or more products from customer roadmaps into F11x's fabrication process.

  • You will be responsible for driving and managing yield optimization efforts, New Product Introduction (NPI) roadmaps, process development, and Test/SORT/Burn-in capacity/capability to deliver product qualification milestones throughout all phases of the product life cycle (PLC).

  • You will be highly engaged in cross-functional teams to solve technical problems and deliver product milestones; interfacing between IPS, F11x process engineering, finance, planning, wafer-level test, quality and reliability (QnR), and OSAT teams.
